What sort of a city is Austin? Is it a working class Stoke type place or much more upmarket?
I'd hope that Phil was clued up to the gap in the market which allows Latino (and poorer kids of all races) to slip through the net.

Austin is the state capital and also home to what some would aruge is best university in Texas, University of Texas at Austin. As such, it is a party town. It is also a high-tech town, the home of Dell Computers and it is about as different from Stoke-on-Trent as you can get. It hosts an annual film festival and music festival, the latter being a place many British bands hoping to make it big in the States want to play at. It's a good place to be. Why else do you think Phil is there?

Fair enough. Well I am sure it has its share of untapped potential for Phil to wake from its slumber. ;D

Untapped potential, I agree, but Austin is far from being a slumbering city. In fact, I bet Phil finds it hard to keep up with the pace sometimes.

Wonder what the standard's like? Montreal get very respectable crowds, and Rochester and Portland are okay. But the rest are a bit Vale-like. I don't know how it works, but I suppose the better players get cherry-picked by the MLS teams?

MLS looks like football but it is not football as we know it. Too be honest, the few times I have watched it on TV, I have turned it off after 10 minutes because it is about on a par with schoolboy football, think Under-15s or how Stoke played up at Newcastle for 80 minutes. I wasn't even aware of this other League until you posted this thread. Just shows how much I know, huh?

Stoke 23,
Dallas has an MLS team, Dallas FC. And I have a feeling Houston does too, but I am not 100 percent certain on that. And that, along with the Austin team, is the sum of the "soccer" presence in the great state of Texas.

I had the fortune of watching a couple of Seattle sounders games over the summer including an impressive 5-1 win over MLS's Colarado rapids There are a couple of players from England playing for them and at times they played some decent football. This barring in mind is not francised. Not sure the eaxct details but. The MLS frnachised teams have better selection of players The Sounder shave now becoem a franchised team and will start playing in the MLS in 2009, I understand that this is also the case for austin texans or whatever then are called. SO I can't see anything happenin on this until next season at the earliest

Some great player names in that wiki article. Hope we sign some of them:
"And Stoke get the 1-up, tackle by Chance Fry setting up the assist by David DiplacidoĆ½ and a score by Cam Weaver on the powerplay"

Austin is a great city, full of students and technoparks, Dell HQ is there (well Round Rock but it's close enough), Samsung USA etc.
The Dell buildings have signs on them "Please check ALL weapons at reception". Welcome to Texas....
I drove from Houston to Austin (about 2 1/2 hours) in the run up to the last election. There were Vote Bush signs everywhere, literally thousands. We counted 3 Vote Kerry ones....
Houston is hot and very humid. There are no sidewalks because nobody wants to walk anywhere.
Austin is drier and the houses cheaper. $200k will get you a ranch with a pool and acres of land.
Airport-Austin-Bergstrom is quite small. Probably easier to fly into Dallas/Fort Worth and drive (3 1/2 hours - 220miles)
The soccer scene in California is really buzzing, especially with Latino teams. Been to a couple of youth games there with friends.

Austin is a decent sized city, any foothold in the states is positive. Its nice to see Phil doing his bit! Perhaps if we sent them pictures of Stoke on Trent.......?

I'd have thought we'd do some kind of tie-up with some kind of surfing resort, given the connotations of "Stoke City" to the surfing world as seen here.

Fullermagic "I suppose work permits will be a major stumbling block with any direct player development?"
At younger age groups up to U-21 I think, scholarships are a good work round.

for high level management positions in commercial entities there is a fast track immigration system. I would guess that they would use the same system to fast track millionaire soccer players in...

I doubt we could get Pericard over there - immigration don't look kindly on criminal records.
Is the SXSW Festival held in Austin? I'd look it up myself, but I can't really be that bothered...
