I'm in software development etc, and there is nothing in the Stoke area at all, but not long before I came back from down south, there was plenty in the manchester, sheffield areas etc. Once I got up here, there was nothing in any of these areas... its hard to find anything for me too at the moment.
There's few jobs apart from IT that I can do (have a persistent knee problem which means I can't walk around a lot some days) so doing things like warehouse work etc until I find something better goes out the window. Which is really annoying, as I wanted to get some cash behind me quickly over christmas. Annoying as hell when employers ask you if you have any problems etc & I have to tell them about this, they suddenly lose a lot of interest in hiring me.

No, I probably could pick it up, but I've never had to make use of .net before so its stuf I'm not directly familiar with. Another thing thats shocking is how much the wages of these jobs have come down, 18 months ago most of the jobs I was looking at were 30k+ a year, now they're 20k usually.
My main problem is that I'm 20, I've done it before for Sega, but I'm going up against people for jobs who have far more experience than I do. It's the reason why I've missed out on 2 of the few jobs that have cropped up.

I generally use C & its variants, I'm sure .net isn't too far off, its just I've never come across it when doing the work I did at sega. It's more of a case of its something I've not used yet and never looked into it.

Have you thought about building services maintenance, or building controls rather than just installation? You have George S Hall on Forge Lane for a start, then there's Dalkia, Norlands loads around. Try www.bsee.co.uk I have their publication monthly and there is loads of jobs for M&E in this months edition

Feel for ya mate. Hope you get summat. Ive been looking since September but its just got worse and worse. The fucking agencies are wank as well. This is where they should earn their corn, not when theres hundreds of jobs but they are simply dense. The job centres a waste of time too. I went to the one in Crewe the other day and it was boarded up

If you don't mind moving down south, there are still loads of constructions sites down london, and whilst i don't think the Olympic site is quite ready for sparkies to go in yet, it wont be far off, they main stadium is already taking shape .
Good luck

Good luck hasn't that area been the biggest issuer of NI numbers to non UK citizens in the UK in the past year? All the jobs going to cheap overseas workers looks like it?

Seems likes there's a lot of us in the same boat. A good thing to do is to ask friends or family if they know of anything. Both of the interviews that I now have arranged have come from doing that.
"It's not what you know, it's who you know."
Good luck to all anyway.
