The Large Hadron Collider will be switched on at CERN. 70 Km from where I am. No need to worry, the worst that will happen is that a minor explosion ruins billions of pounds worth of equipment. The second worse will be that they discover nothing and have wasted billions.

ohhhhh this is to do with all that dark matter and such. I think the world is safe but if the big bang theory is proven then where do we stand with religion

You can claim god started the big bang. Maybe it is some sort of cosmic fart. We are just the little shitty particles that escaped some deities sphincter. The dark matter is all the gas that got out.

Sounds interesting to me. I will be keeping an eye on this in the future although I don't think they are starting the crash the particles until October are they.

I can't wait to see the results, but it will be years till they are published. They can't exactly do a quick analysis. Also as this is the only place to do the experiments, they won't be under pressure to get their results out first.

When they've finished with it they should put a load of hamsters in there and let them run around in absolute bliss. One of 'em would probably find the Higgs Bosson.

if you let them do it for infinity, I am sure one or two will find this elusive Boson.

I had to do a presentation a few years ago when i was applying for a job there. there is another one, or use to be at Culham laboratories near to Didcot. well if the worlds going to end tomorrow I'd better go and white line the pitches, wouldn't want them looking shabby at the end of time. Just so happens it's next to the cricket club and I'll sink a few when I'm finished.

Don't know the details of the name of the computers being used, but I know they have had to work out a way of processing billions of data points. They have links to supercomputing centres all over the world, one is indeed at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory in Oxfordshire near Didcot. I go there quite often, (not for the computers, I use the neutron source there).
