imo Whelan was our best player yesterday so I was baffled when TP took him off. However, John Acres and Nigel Gleghorn on radio stoke said Whelan was having a nightmare and were not surprised to see him go off. Was I missing something cos it looked like he was the only one actually putting his foot on the ball and trying to play imo.

He seemed to give the ball away a few times, but yes, he didn't play as bad as others, I personally thought Griff had a very mixed game, some good play, some truly awful play.

Can't agree-thought the game passed him by. We looked a lot better after the changes but Bolton in 2nd gear

I thought Whelan didn't have a good game yesterday. I didn't think he was shocking just a bit below par. I did speak to a few people at and after the game who thought he was our best midfielder until he was subbed. I thought Olli was slightly better. Having said that, I'd have taken Cresswell (and not Whelan) off when Lawrence came on and moved Delap to the left side.

Gleghorn was spot on yesterday when he said we needed players who can hold on to the ball and keep it fo us. Judging by the commentary yesterday Whelan wasnt doing this.

In my opinion he had a bad game yesterday, it seemed like everything went too fast for him. Time after time he lost the ball when he was on his way forward. Yesterday it actually seemed like he was both too slow and weak, and I won't be surprised to se him dropped for the Villa game.

We certainly looked better when Delap moved into the middle (he was lost on the right). I'm not sure if we picked up the pace due to Lenny and Delap or just because Lenny had come on?
Not sure about Wheelan when he threw the tracksuit top to the floor in anger after being subbed, it could show he cares but is not really what we need to be seeing.

I couldn't understand why he was brought off either, he looked pumped up for the game and knocked in alot of quality into the box. Pulis always seems to amaze me when he makes a substitution so I knew it had to be Mama and Whelan to come off and not Griffin/Cresswell.
We aren't far away now at all, just a couple more players and I think we have the quality to stay up.

wilkinson, griffin, cresswell,DELAP should never pull on another stoke shirt while we are in the premier, delap was shit on the right and even worse in the middle, you need to hold on to the ball in the prem and whelan does that, theses four are just not good enougth

Could you honestly say that he matched their midfield two??? looked out of his depth as did half of our side .
I think this is one area where we will need to find a decent attacking midfield player if we are to have any chance of survival

I think Whelan was one of our better players yesterday. He was the main player putting in the tackles. I agree he did lose the ball alot but there again this was because his team mates movements were not sharp enough. Would of taken Cresswell instead of Whelan.
Whelan's reaction for being subbed was to storm off throw his tracksuit top away and appeared to kick the dugout. Passion/frustration!

I thought Whelan had a bad game, but who had a good one besides Fuller and pos Lawro?.... He let the game pass him by.

Oddly enough Delap was playing on the left when we won at Wolves - one of our best performances last season
Pulis wanted to put Lennie on and keep Delap so he opted for the least number of changes by keeping (the poor) Cresswell on.
Whelan was ok yesterday but we were replacing one good player with another - thats what happens in the Prem
Booing out of order imo

Wheland was one of the four players i thought looked like they had a bit premiership class about him, the others being, kitson, lenny and fuller when they came on.
Only one game but if start with griff against Villa we will get shafted quite royaly

i thought he did ok aswell as olly, must be hard though when you have to do your own jobs and then try help carry a piss poor left winger and a toss right winger! delap and cresswell should have gone off as they were both simply wank, but hang on a min delap has to stay on because he can throw a ball! big fucking wow! and cresswell works ard! sorry tony but if thats plan A then get working on b c d e f and g now!

Whelan gave a below par performance but then so did a few others. Hardly surprising given that they are not yet accustomed to playing against players of a consistently higher level of quality week in week out. Osasuna/Nuremberg all well and good in terms of testing us at a different level but they were only friendlies.
Whelan was read all too easily by Nolan and Muamba. He needs to think and act a split second quicker, he got caught too many times. But he tackled well. Oli was not as good as he was against Osasuna but not sure you can compare. He is another player that was playing Championship football last season week in week out and the Prem (even a team that finished 4th bottom) is a different kettle of fish.
Onwards and upwards ... COME ON STOKE !!!!!!!!!!!!

Please do not comment on a players performance if you didn't go to the game!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Whelan was our best player at the time hence the boos when he got subbed.

Isn't it weird how we all see games differently!
I thought Whelan was ok yesterday and I was surprised it was him that came off. The one certainty was we improved with the introduction of Lawro and Fuller

I honestly thought Whelan was our best player yesterday. He put his foot on the ball and found men when in possession. He may have been caught out a couple of times but so were lots of players.
We did improve afer the substitution but that was because Lawrence came on. I think it should have been Cresswell who went off and not Whelan.

Without doubt because we actually got close to their goal when they were introduced.
Lawro putting in some good crosses and gives us that balance on the right side and fuller was up to his usual skillful trickery.

Nobody in the middle of the pitch won the ball enough, Whelan included. We let them play it around us and our midfielders offered almost nothing defensively.

Cant say i thought Whelan had a great game, For me Oli was better trying to hold the ball and not just lumping it forward. We do need a ball winner in the middle though so perhaps Daio is the answer so long as he is fully fit. I thought Cresswell struggled as did Wilkinson, Cort looked out of his depth at times so Faye will hopefully fill that gap. Griffin blew hot and cold throughout the game and looked suspect. We improved vastly as an attacking team when Fuller and Lawrence came on so some positives there. All in all some positives and negatives which hopefully we can learn by.

We need a player who can hold the ball a bit and not just lumping it forward. I don't think Whelan is quick enough, and not quite good enough on it. Still a nice player to have in the squad and can grow into it.
