Apart from Fulop , the other three would give us a strong Championship side not a premiership side. I would not spend big money on any of them. Sunderland struggled last year and these three were not regular starters for them all season, surly that must say something and start the alarm bells ringing ???? Fulop only for me I'm afraid. We survived fairly comfortably in the end with a few games to go, and bear in mind we were savaged with injuries (had our 4 strongest midfield players out for several months at the same time), and had quite a few BIG decisions go against us. Whitehead missed the first couple of months with injury but once he returned, he started EVERY game for us... and I still can't see Keane allowing him to leave because Keane loves him.. and he is still good enough for our starting line up. Murphy started most games in the second half of the season and was by far our best winger last season.. (Carlos Edwards was injured for the most part and was poor when he returned), he was the only winger in our team who had any sort of end product... and still our only player who can actually get to the byline and stick crosses in. Keane will not allow him to leave until we bring in another striker btw, we are thread bear in that department. Jones is out for several months (our best player), O'Donnovan and Stokes are still very much work in progress and not ready for the Premiership yet, and Chopra needs a partner to play alongside. In the friendly games, Keane has played Murphy as a striker as we have no other options, dont expect him to leave until we bring one or two in. I think Higgy will be leaving though as he is not in Roy's first team plans, and cant break into our defence as it is and thats excluding Chimbonda and Kaboul. Wouldnt be suprised to see him part of the Fulop deal. Is McShane above Higgy in the pecking order Kert? Was he as gash as MOTD led us to believe?

Hell Nooooo lol.... Higgy is above Mcshane in the pecking order by far, but at the moment I would say this would be our strongest defence:
Bardsley (RB) --- Nosworthy (CB) --- Anderson (CB) --- Collins (LB)
If we sign the players we want then this could be our defence:
Chimbonda (RB) --- Nosworthy (CB) --- Kaboul (CB) --- Taiwo (LB)
That would leave Higginbotham far down the pecking order, and we would certainly need to let one or two go. Higginbotham wasnt bad for us last season, his defending was fairly solid for the majority of the time, and he started out fantasticly with some heroic performances and really marshalled our defence. Unfortunatly Nosworthy got injured and he was forced to play alongside Mcshambles... who has no positional awareness what so ever... and teams just ripped us apart (they were together in our 7 - 1 defeat to everton), and the confidence of both of them were shot to peices. Nosworthy returned, and we signed Evans on loan and they were fantastic together and Higgy never got back in the team unfortunatly. He did have to come in as cover for a few games while Evans was injured and he looked fairly solid. He made a couple of mistakes (a pass back and gave away penalties) but he made up for that with goals at the other end.
Mcshane is currently sidelined with a knee injury anyway.

Yep, you can say that again..... his name has been put down on the shite (but hilarious) defenders list alongside Bramble, Boumsong, the entire Derby defence ect. Unfortunatly, the git injured himself while on holiday and now faces a long stint out so we are stuck with him

Surely no-one in their right mind buys a defender off West Brazil ,they are well renowned for being wank at the back.

You'd think so but Keane went to see them a few times and liked what he saw Maybe he got Mcshane mixed up with Curtis Davies??

Abit news on the Higginbotham situation; he has been named in the reserve squad which is made up of mainly youth players for the Hartlepool tournement, and it looks as though he wont be travelling with the first team to Ireland for another pre-season tour. Edwards, Chopra, Anderson, Wallace and Prica have also been left behind.

A North-East paper is saying Whitehead's been told he can leave. www.readytogo.net/smb/showthread.php?t=340099The 29-year-old full-back, who moved to White Hart Lane from Wigan for £4.5 million in August 2006, becomes the second Spurs player to move to Wearside following Teemu Tainio’s switch.
The latter’s arrival could spell the end of Dean Whitehead’s time on Wearside; the Sunday Sun understands that the Sunderland skipper has been told he can leave the club.

If we signed Whitehead to play Right Back I'd be chuffed as he has to be better than Griffin in that position. If we were buying as a CM I think we need to strengthen in other areas before we buy more for that position.
Murphy is a player who i'm not sure would really add a great deal, but I've not seen him play all that often.
I'd rather we left Higgy alone and shopped elsewhere. I know it's daft, but I'd rather we were not responsible for allowing him to continue his premiership dream. I'd like to see him sold to a CCC club.

SUNDERLAND boss Roy Keane was last night celebrating the signing of Pascal Chimbonda, as he launched a shock bid for Bolton bad boy El Hadji Diouf. Chimbonda has agreed a three-year contract after the Black Cats agreed an undisclosed fee with Tottenham. The 29-year-old full-back, who moved to White Hart Lane from Wigan for £4.5 million in August 2006, becomes the second Spurs player to move to Wearside following Teemu Tainio’s switch. The latter’s arrival could spell the end of Dean Whitehead’s time on Wearside; the Sunday Sun understands that the Sunderland skipper has been told he can leave the club. www.sundaysun.co.uk/sport/sun...9310-21412755/

Whitehead is fairly poor at right back, we only play him there when we are really desperate but thats because he is a complete proffesional and he could do a job where ever you play him. We got exposed in the premiership when he played there however, his best position is central midfield and I would imagine he is good enough to play there for you guys considering he has had 2 years experience in the premiership and both times he has been very good. I dont know much about Whelan so its hard to comment, but I'd say he is a better all round midfield player than Olifinjana. We did actually turn down a £5 million pound bid from Liverpool the last time we got relegated from premiership, so thats credit to him that he managed to put in fantastic performances and stand out in a very poor team. Would be a fantastic signing for you although i'd imagine you would face stiff competition. Personally dont understand why Keane is allowing him to leave, ideally we would like Reid and Richardson battling it out for one midfield slot, and Tainio and Whitehead battling it out for the other midfield slot. Considering Tainio is injury prone, id say its foolish of Keane to sell Whitehead... especially to a relegation rival. If you do get him you have a cracking Premiership player on your hands

It's actually interesting to see how underwhelmed people were at the thought of Whitehead signing and Higgy coming back when they've been arguably our best two performers over the last two or three months.
We definitely dodged the bullet on the other two though.
