Very bright over Sheffield. Visible to the naked eye - for anyone with a good phone, do a night vision photo and you'll see the colours. For me its directly over head and not to the north too. Yes my daughter was travelling back to Sheffield from Castleton late last night and got some fantastic shots in the Peak District.

Any connection with yesterday's solar flare activity? Yep, charged particles from the Sun get spun around by the Earth's magnetic field and funnelled to the magnetic poles. When the particles smack into the atmosphere the energy comes out as lights. Solar flares send a load of powerful particle "fuel" that revs up the lights. There are both northern and southern lights because Earth's got two magnetic poles, but noone gives a shit about the southern ones. (Yeah I know it's nerdy shit but you asked for it) I'm fortunate to have seen them in both polar regions, in the same day I saw killer whales swimming nearby, walked amongst elephant seals and seen the southern lights, not a bad day that one.

Amazing experience - I've seen them before but at the edge of the horizon and nothing as spectacular as that.
