Extra time then held back. Must have been after 1030 when we finally got out of Ninnian Park. And the bastards were still there throwing bricks at us 😊

One of the most important games in our history. My lad has got both Super James's and Oulare's shirt at his house which he won at an auction of the shirts after the game. They're priceless to us as a massive Stokie family. Our 600 fans who attended were known as the 'Fabulous 600' after we won. Wish I'd been there.

I missed the promotion game against Leicester in 2008, lived abroad for our first two Premier League seasons and abroad again for 2012-2015 so I've missed a lot of classics. Even the month I moved back home I got called to work on the day I should've been going to the 6-1 v Liverpool match.
However, If I could choose to go to one of the many games I've missed over the years, i'd choose this one hands down. I remember how the mentals felt at home to an 18-year-old me, I can only dream about how they must've felt in the away end...

Was back at the ground for the beam back and it was the birthplace of Nigel's "Heads bobbing up and down like corks in the sea" line.
Without a doubt one of his top 5 commentaries alongside Mick Cullerton.
Fabulous night. Sergei and Handyside(RIP skipper) were imperious.

A few years ago my daughter for no obvious reason asked me which was my favourite ever Stoke City game. I had no hesitation in telling her it was this game.
A couple of weeks later a mug arrived for me for Father’s Day.
On it was printed a replica of the Ceefax page from that evening:
CEEFAX 303 Wed 01 May 2002 22:39 DIVISION TWO PLAY OFF SEMI FINAL 2ND LEG RESULT CARDIFF CITY 0-2 STOKE CITY O’Connor 90 Oulare 115 STOKE CITY WIN 3-2 ON AGGREGATE
I’ve still got it and it’s still my favourite mug 🙂

Also worth noting the importance of Deon Burton’s goal to get one back in the first leg. I remember feeling like we’d really made a mess of it at 2-0 down.

Maybe Id given it up as bad job. I remember going absolutely mental when that 90th minute goal came up. Id probs only flicked it on to get confirmation of the final score

Yep Burton’s goal was massive, though we probs didnt know it at the time. Also shortly before, Earnshaw or Fortune-West missed a one on one that would have put the tie to bed

Not sure if I'm getting confused with the promotion to the prem but didn't we have a mini pitch invasion to the big screen after the win?

Still totally blown away by that night. Clarke running up the wing appeared to be in slow motion. I’d lost my voice by the final whistle and proud to have been there.

without these great memories again 22 years on Thanks for posting that. It's right up there as one of the most unforgettable experiences watching Stoke. A few days before I had been at the annual PFA Awards dinner, where I met Clive Clark. He had been fed up that Gudjon made him wait until the end of the season for an op on his knee. I remember asking him who was the PFA rep at Stoke. "Neil Cutler" was the answer. What's he like as a PFA rep I asked. Quick as a flash came the reply - "same as he is as a 'keeper. When you need him sometimes he's there, sometimes he isn't" As CC went down the left on that attack with minutes to go, I remember bellowing "go on Clarky, one final run on that gammy knee" which he did of course, put a good cross in, and it's put back in to J O'C and the rest is history. When the winner went in, I don't think there's ever been a 'mental' like it ! I agree Malcolm, there's been some top mentals over the years but for sheer relief, the timing of the goal & the opposition, I can honestly say that this is quite possibly the best of them all! & that was watching it back at the Britannia on the big screen as couldn't get a ticket for the second leg at Ninian. One can only imagine what actually being there must have been like! I still remember to this day my head was hurting after that goal went in, it felt like it was exploding with joy and celebration & relief all in one! Think those of us that remembered the disappointment of defeat away to Walsall at the Bescot and the Gillingham shenanigans in earlier play off battles, this was finally our time and boy did it feel good! Especially as we had come back from almost certain defeat in a play off battle, & the fact it was against Cardiff and everything that meant at that time, was a very sweet moment indeed & one that will forever be a very happy Stoke memory!

What was our starting lineup that day? It's in Robo10's post... I watched with a few thousand in the ground on a big screen - quite a few had left before Jimmy scored Got a random bear hug from a young lady next to me as it went fairly mental, the winner, and the stress of it after (didnt they miss a sitter in normal time? Thorney? somehow bounced into Cutlers arms?) Some names here - and a certain Mike Dean as ref Cardiff: Alexander, Weston, Young, Prior, Croft, Boland, Kavanagh, Bonner (Maxwell 112), Fortune-West, Earnshaw (Campbell 88), Thorne (Bowen 105). Subs Not Used: Bywater, Collins. Stoke: Cutler, Thomas, Handyside, Shtaniuk, Clarke, Gudjonsson, O'Connor, Dinning (Vandeurzen 104), Gunnlaugsson (Cooke 88), Iwelumo (Oulare 71), Burton. Subs Not Used: Viander, Brightwell. Att: 19,367. Referee: M Dean (The Wirral).

It was an unusual day. We set off on the coaches with the instructions that tickets would only be handed out during the journey, due to football violence that were associated with these fixtures at the time (a judge a described Stoke as looking like Beruit during one prosecution). Some S. Western Stokies were picked up at a motorway services. Speaking to one of our fellow Stokies there was an unknown sort of empty feeling during the trip. I guess this was the case as there was no chance of visiting any pubs or anything outside of the stand.
The game started and we made a solid start and as the game wore on it seemed Cardiff were running out of ideas. When the first goal went in I have not really known a mental like it before or since, there were mostly adults going absolutely berserk. The chance was there and at least we might have the opportunity of penalities.
The second went in, another great mental, but not as intense as the first. I guess the nervous energy kicked in and people were just trying not to celebrate too early.
Once the final whistle went it just pure delight, with players and Gudjon coming over after going off for a break. We were kept behind for an enormous amount of time as Cardiff fans were rioting outside and trying to throw things into our stand. I'd say we were there for what seemed like an hour and 1/2.
The coach back was oddly quite quiet with people just reflecting on the fact that we'd in fact have to return back to Cardiff to make all of this worthwhile.
Some of these memories seem like they were yesterday, some of the people are sadly no longer with us and of course the rest of us are a lot older.
I still regard this as my favourite game of all time and Ninian park will always hold very special memories for me.

Great memories watching the beam back at the Brit..
Greatest mental ever watching a beam back.
Greatest memory for a goal scored off a players arse.
How many mores greatests.
Think the Brentford final was the last game shown on On Digital. They went bump soon after I think..Have the game on video somewhere..

Thanks for posting that, really enjoyed it.
Couple of things. Some people say that players don't care. James O'Connor's sprint back up the pitch after that first goal. Littlist guy jumps for the first header then bounces back up so quick to put it in the net. Then a new record for the 100m in Wales. I think he cared. That night he played a massive part in the years that followed.
Oulare's Arse goes down in folklore, but it's Super James O'Connor's heart that won it for us. Sheer relief and joy on his face after the deflected free kick.
Also electric commentary from Nigel Johnson. In those moments he is just like us. A true lifetime supporter living and loving it. Reminds me of Joe's avatar. "Stoke have scored! Oh Stoke have scored!!" He is ecstatic. Amazing commentary, or as the man himself might have said, "Ahhhbsolutely top drawer!"
And the old fine margins cliche. What a cross that lad stood up at the back post. How did Fortune West miss that.
