I can see the point you're making, I just disagree. You can tell how 'in control of the ball' he was by the way he was flapping around after losing the ball. I mean I’m not 100% on it myself, it’s a tricky one. I was just responding to the suggestion that it’s not possible to commit a foul “passively” Well, McNally demonstrated that it's very doable.

Not really, the whole panel on Sky last night said the goalkeeper was incredibly lucky, even after reading the letter of the law. www.stokesentinel.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/swansea-stoke-niall-ennis-goal-9217874Having seen the letter of the law, I don't think the correct decision was made. I guess there's a measure of ambiguity for a weird situation like this, but I would say that the goalkeeper was in control of the ball and made a positive action, even if he wouldn't have done that if he realised Ennis was there. I don't know how you can commit a foul passively. It's just a goalkeeping error. Imagine a player is skipping backwards or sideways without looking where he’s going and inadvertently barges into the goalkeeper as he’s about to throw it out, causing him to drop the ball. That’s a “passive” challenge on the keeper while he has the ball and would be given as a foul every time. That’s the principle applied to the Ennis incident, it’s just much less of a clear-cut case. I would say it's more like a player standing completely still while the goalkeeper runs up to him and uses both hands to slam the ball into him. I'm not sure if I've quite articulated that properly, sort of bouncing the ball off the player without the ball ever leaving his hands. The goalkeeper used his control of the ball to make a stupid mistake.

One thing I do know for a fact, if that incident happened to any Stoke keeper, home or away, in all of our 161 year history, it would have been a goal.

Must admit I did think of the time that Watford striker kicked the shit out of Angus Gunn and threw him and the ball into the net in one move, and the ref said that was fine. We don’t really get much luck from refs do we.

We don’t really get much luck from refs do we. That was a ref not seeing the incident. The ball had bounced down off the bar and the Watford player set the watch off by shoving Gunn and the ball over the line Horrendous decision We had another one v Norwich when Krul misjudged a corner , and created a collision with the back our defender before going down injured. The ref bought it and disallowed the goal I think we could have gone top that night and lost 3-2
