I was in Frankfurt for a week last summer. I stayed a few blocks south of the station near to the river. If you were to walk directly into the centre from the station you quickly enter the red light district which is the rough area. I passed through the area during the day and early evening and never felt unsafe. Before you ask, no I didn't take advantage of the "facilities." Admittingly I never entered the dodgy area late at night.

There's a pub in Frankfurt called the Birmingham where they've got photos of the Bull Ring Shopping Centre on the walls. Weird place.

The smoking in pubs and restaurants. They will come and tell you that you didn't use the bog brush in the pub's toilet when you had a shit but are happy to sit in a cloud of smoke all night. It must be the law..or maybe the Germans can ignore the rules when it suits.

Only small bars are allowed to allow smokers inside and only those not serving hot food apparently 🙂 there are quite a few "small" bars about though 😁

That Irish bar across from the station is pretty big and allows smoking

That place basically has a separate smoking room so probably get around it that way

Have to say I agree with a smoking rule that says it's up to the owner of the bar as to whether they allow smoking or not. Their business choice. If there is no demand for a smoking pub/restaurant then it will go bump. People who don't fancy working in a smoky establishment need not apply. I personally dont think govt should be legislating on this type of thing.

Don't follow the advice from Uefa to book accommodation in or around Frankfurt Main Station for the England Euro game there. It is the biggest shithole in the city and although some reports are a bit OTT it is not suitable for anyone to stay in my opinion unless you're desperate. The streets especially at night aren't particularly safe and it can be a bit scary if you're not aware of your own safety. I've been to the railway station and the main bus station dozens of times over the last few years and its as rough a place as I've seen. So book a place elsewhere in the city or even outside towards Darmstadt as the trains are excellent, cheap around £6 for a 24hr day ticket and frequent every 30mins, get off at Neu-Isenburg using the S3 or S4 train from the city centre or Darmstadt and walk to the stadium through the forest about 2miles but plenty walk that route and its safe I've done it myself. Finding a place to drink and eat is not an issue there are hundreds or bars and places to eat throughout the city and beyond the main city centre. I suppose the main square at Romerberg is favourite, but over the river in Sachsenhausen is decent for food and drink but there are so many you won't struggle to get fed and watered. Cheers for the advice mate, we’re booked in the Moxy hotel in the Innenstadt, is that a decent location? Was originally in the Holiday Inn by the station but have cancelled.

We are booked in an apartment in Mainz about 15 minutes outside Frankfurt by train. We had a great week in Frankfurt for the world cup in 2006, but we are a lot older and prefer something a little quieter!! That said, i'm sure we will venture to Sachsenhausen on at least one occasion to see if we can still hack it?? Never had a bad trip to Germany.

I wouldn't say it was any different to hundreds of other large european cities. For some reason the rough areas do tend to be near the main train stations.

Not bad at all mate literally 100yrds from one of my favourite bars in town Eschenheimer (link in another post) if its the one i think it is (Moxy City Centre)right in the middle of the city pedestrian area, they have all live football on there and you're the same distance from the main street Zeil. Bizarre but it's worth a look is a roof top outside bar at the top of the shopping center MyZeil great views over the city. I like Moxy hotels I've stayed at the one at Cologne airport a few times when I've been on my way home and stopped for a night out in Cologne before we flew home the next morning.
