Don’t go straight to the game from the Holiday Inn Go onto Stoke town centre for a couple of hours. There’ll be plenty of Stokies willing to have a chat. Try the White Star (now Kingsway) or the Glebe You can get a shuttle bus back to the game anytime up to 2.45

The easy option if you're in the hotel is to drink by the ground. Aside from the Cricket Club, it's a bit shit in my opinion. Used to go to the Gardeners on occasion but it was always clicky as fuck, don't know if it still is.
Personally always drink in Stoke town which is a couple of miles from the ground but worth it. The Glebe, Kingsway (possibly closed) Wetherspoons/Wheatsheaf, Liquor Vaults, Staff of Life, all have what I would call a proper football atmosphere. Return bus from Glebe Street will sort you out after sampling those. Always a good craic getting the bus close to kick off when everyone piles out of the aforementioned pubs.

The Glebe is an excellent shout.
London Road Ale House is also brilliant for your craft ales.

Father in laws first time in the country, wanted to get to Newcastle. You can guess which train they put him on. The one with the train station? Newcastle under Lyme had a train station.

After seven years on the other side of the Atlantic, falling in love with our club as we've fallen down the ladder, I'm finally going to be able to make it to my first game on Easter Monday. (I'm overseas for a period of time, and this is the weekend I'm best able to make it work). I’ve got my ticket for Block 22, but other than that I have no idea what to expect -- what does a typical matchday look like from the fan experience perspective? Any must do's/must not do's or general advice would be much appreciated. I’m staying at the Holiday Inn right by the stadium if that’s at all relevant. Apologies for the cross post from the travel board — one of the commenters recommended I do so. Where are you from? I'm from the US (near-ish Boston).

You have to have a pint in Ricardo’s.. you can actually access it at half time at the far end of the concourse towards the corner.

The Glebe is an excellent shout. Seconded. Get to the Glebe early doors and get the bus up to the stadium.

Back in the day I used to go it’d be Locomotive in Heron Cross before the game (10-15 min walk to the ground) then Stoke after, finishing up in the Glebe and possibly Sanghams👀

It's a pity that some one like yourselves can not get into Ricardo's which would be a ideal experience for you. If you are about maybe try and appeal to the ticket office. Early as possible on Sat morning I would suggest. Having said that good old fashioned English pubs nearby are an experience worth having for visitors from the USA.😊 ENJOY. A ticket to Ricardo’s should easily be awarded following a special journey across the Atlantic. Such a fine effort would also have warranted a free trip in Airwolf, to yesterday’s match, with the Coates family! 🙂

Firstly, congratulations on making the correct decision to follow Stoke City F.C. Secondly, have a wonderful day and give yourself time to get in slightly before kick off, and have a pint or two before ( if you drink?), and let's hope it's a great match with loads of goals and we win 💪.

Walk across and get yourself into Ricardos in the ground. Opens at 12 then gets very busy later

Apologies for the cross post from the travel board — one of the commenters recommended I do so. Get yourself an oatcake from the Barge on the canal. Then take a walk to Longton Rugby club with other stokies for a couple beers and watch the early games in there. After that take a walk to the ground. All within walking distance of each other and your day is sorted.

Gloryhunter That’s me! First time I watched us play was the 1-1 draw against West Ham away in the relegation season, and I’ve been basking in the string of rip-roaring successes ever since

Hem Heath cricket club, 5 min walk with a good atmosphere and food available wouldn’t be afraid to go on my own as a good bunch always wanting to chat all things Stoke. Enjoy I’ll be watching from Lanzarote ☀️

I’m coming up from Herts with a car full of daughters ,(one coming down from from Manchester) and a boyfriend,he’s Chelsea but loves watching us…we are all stupidly excited ….block 22….usual beautiful shit. A couple of goals in front of the Boothen,go completely berserk and embrace complete strangers, set off back down south debating whether to do A50,M1 or M6 .

Not sure where Herts is ? Is the M40 any good but probably involves the dreaded M6 . I remember being stupidly excited in the 1980s...Probably the music though ..

I travel over from Norway twice a year to watch Stoke, and me and my wife always stay in a hotel in Hanley. If it's sunny I think it's OK to have a couple of beers at the Harvester before the game. Never experienced anything but a good atmosphere there. Always a lot of away fans too, but as said always a good atmosphere there. I'm not sure I'd go to Ricardo's instead to be honest, but as a first time experience you probably should. Hopefully you'll have a good experience and see us climb 3 points closer to safety!

If its a nice day walk along the canal from the West side of the ground and head for the town itself whilst trying a cheese and bacon oatcake from the barge on the canal. Try a couple of pints of Guinness in the Glebe and a couple more of Marstons Pedigree in the Staff of life, then jump on the shuttle bus back up to the ground.
After this you will be considered a full fledged Stokie.

Thank you all so much for the advice! I had a great day, complete with a pint at the Glebe, an oatcake from the barge, a walk along the canal, enough on the pitch to both cheer and bitch mightily about, and then dinner at the Harvester before heading out. Here’s hoping I won’t be waiting another seven years for my next visit!
