Had a quick chat with him afterwards - not that we needed it confirming but he said it was a cross.

Played well and worked really hard for the team.
Had a couple of shockers on the left of late, he’s much more comfortable in his position today…..

Long term though, where does he play? Couldn't care less about long term at the moment.

Likable player, the kind of person that gets player of the year in a relegated team, like Kevin Keen or Joe Allen.

I like him. Think he could feature here for sometime if he plays like that consistently. Same for Thompson. Defensively sound. Great fluke goal for the confidence.

He puts more effort in than most. Has he ever played CM as I could see him being a right little terrier in the middle.

There are times when I’ve seen Gooch take a lot of risk with the ball, in situations where if it goes wrong we will give away a chance - especially against better sides. He’s good going forwards at times but I really think he flatters to deceive - had a good game yesterday as the things he tried mostly came off but he worries me and I don’t think he has the quality to back up his obvious confidence. He might be ok in central midfield as long as he is able to be a bit more disciplined- a big if

In the mould of Thompson. Think he will do a job whenever he plays and a real team player, but will never be outstanding, although he was good yesterday - at least he has a bit of pace and tries to make things happen.

Listening to his interview I was expecting an American drawl but instead he sounded like a slight geordie with a touch of Irish thrown in. His accent is all over the shop. Basically due to the fact he’s American but been in Sunderland’s academy half of his life. Now he has a very weird North East English-American hybrid of an accent.

When he gets the ball you can tell he wants to be positive, to try to make things happen. While the rest of the back four are intent on bumping up the possession stats by passing it ponderously between each other, he's trying to push us forward. I've not seen a Stoke performance this season that hasn't been improved by him being on the pitch. You can see why Sunderland fans really took to him. Being as he looks to make things happen when he gets on the ball doesn’t it strike you that the only thing he’s made happen is a fluke goal from a mishit cross. Maybe he’s really not very good at making things happen and some people just like his Tiggerish (Scrappy Doo) body language.

Long term though, where does he play? Couldn't care less about long term at the moment. Okay then, short term, as in when the new manager comes in. He’s not a right back, he’s not an out and out winger. He’s a wing back and we hopefully won’t be playing that system. He’s a utility player so not really someone to pin our hopes on.

If he lacks qualify.... Fuck knows what the rest lack.......have you always been attention seeking? Posting an option on a message board isn’t attention seeking. It’s just my personal view, I’m not bothered if you disagree with it but for me I want to see players with a good attitude and quality on the ball. It doesn’t have to be one or the other. Ok. I accept its about opinions ( albeit me disagreeing with it ). Who then in your opinion does have good quality and attitude?

I would beg to differ, he is perhaps one of the only ones in our team who actually seems to think forwards, want to break the lines and then present his team mates with at least some chance of having an overload. The rest of them are generally pass it back and across in front of the opposition with no intention of making anything happen...and as someone else has said I think he is one of the few you would want in the trenches in a relegation scrap.

Past his best that’s why Sunderland let him go but he gives his all. Anyone else involved in the build up to the goal and it doesn’t happen. Think it was a quickly taken free kick that started it that he pointed and shouted to be given the ball otherwise the others would still be standing round hands on hips half arsed. Just wish we had at least half the team that showed his attitude. Past his best? He isn't even 28 yet and I thought they let him go because he was in the last year of his contract. There was some talk that we took him instead of a payment for Batth that Sunderland were due to pay us.

I like Thompson too. Strong championship teams are built around a hard working spine of good enough players plus a few difference makers. The problem for me is where he plays.

He's just coming into his prime, he's been one of the better signings of the summer, he's a proper Stoke player.
