I know there are N Soul fans on here and there is also an excellent thread.
However a quick heads up to anyone who may be interested. This year's Albert Hall Proms have a session this evening dedicated to this unique form of Soul music and it will hopefully be well worth watching.
On BBC this evening Sat at 0800pm.đ

Iâm actually playing in it in the orchestraâŚ..2nd trumpetâŚ..itâs going to be ace. Cracking singers and pretty faithful arrangements of the tunesI hope thereâs gonna be some dancing in the prom area because that could be potentially amazing.Iâm a bit too young(58) to have been there but feel I really missed out.The Golden Torch gets a mention in Stuart Maconies introâŚ..

In all my years playing at the Albert Hall Iâve never seen it jumping quite so much as tonightâŚ.it was fucking amazing.First half there were a few pockets of dancers but by the end every single person was up on their feet giving it some.Got talking to a couple who were in the choir stalls on the way off the stage, they loved it and had come down from Blackpool.

I saw a little bit of the first night of the proms the other night. Serious question, does the person at the front waving their arms about really make any difference whatsoever to the performance????

Sadly yes and sadly 90% of em are utter shite. If you get a good one then they can totally make a performance,if you donât then itâs heads down and hope for the best. Thankfully last night there was no messing with that power house rhythm section and the conductor, whoâs a really decent bloke, just really had to start it in the right tempo and finish it. Conducting definitely isnât as easy as it looks and thereâs loads of bullshitting charlatans out thereâŚ..on good money I hasten to add.

Stuart Maconie (and Mark Radcliffe) have just been playing a couple of songs from last night on BBC6 Music. And reading some of the words from people who were there. Even thatâs worth a listen on Sounds - âThe Nightâ (Frankie Valli) is sensational! Apparently you played 31 songs kerouac!

I do like Stuart Maconie. He did an excellent Radio 4 thing a few weeks ago on J B Priestley. Doesnât sound very exciting I know! But JBP was a really interesting writer and broadcaster and Maconieâs angle to a large extent was that he was an example of a breed that perhaps no longer exists - an âintellectualâ who was also a household name. Almost certainly still on Sounds.

Almost certainly still on Sounds. I heard that it was great. In his current book "The Full English" is a tour of Britain and its regions based on that Priestley travelogue in the 21st century. There is a full chapter on the Potteries. www.amazon.co.uk/Full-English-Sunday-Times-bestseller/dp/0008498261?ref=d6k_applink_bb_dls&dplnkId=4baa65f2-f53c-4bc8-938b-311109ad372a
