I know it's easy for old blokes like me to go on about the old days and how much better they were etc. But looking at this lovely pic and thinking about the likes of John, and Jimmy Greenhoff and Terry Conroy and the gang it actually makes me feel really sad to think that we will never again see the likes of this simpler and somehow more wholesome form of football. Or maybe I'm just being a silly old fool...

He had a nice Ford Cortina Ghia 2 litre black late 60's or 1970 model in the day, supplied by Chatsworths in Hanley and he was very proud of that car! I had a similar company car, only the 1300 engine but it was brilliant. Edit. I think he bought that when he came back again from Sheffield Wednesday.

Vinny Overson used to cycle to the Vic too If I remember right the man of the match prize in the Coca Cola Cup was a sponsored mountain bike. I think Overson kept winning them. There was photo in the programme of him getting one when we knocked Chelsea out in 1995.

I think this was in the programme circa 1975, and he’s riding the cycle as part of recovering from a broken leg….if I recall correctly.

Spoke to Big John many moons ago at a family do at Wolstanton Golf club.

The word ‘legend’ is bandied about so freely these days, but big John was a real legend.
Devastated when he left us for Sheffield Wednesday Elated when he returned.

Just imagine him as the target man in AN's proposed 4.3.3 system. Yes but if he hadn’t sadly passed away he’d be too old I think.
