Goals scored in the last 7 league games 1 v Bristol City 0 v Birmingham 1 v West Brom 0 v Wigan 1 v Cardiff 0 v QPR 0 v Watford That's fuckin abysmal Stoke against 7 bang average at best teams We were on 51 points 7 games ago. The only positive is that the loanees he got in Jan window got us the necessary points to keep us up. Once we’d hit the +50 points they weren’t interested in playing for us. That has been his problem the last 7 games since Coventry imo. The PPG since the loanees came in is lower than the 28 games before they arrived. I don't think they made as big an impact as made out.

Looking for a progress angle. Struggling 16 Stoke City 46 11 22 13 45 52 −7 55 15 Stoke City 46 16 8 22 62 68 −6 56 14 Stoke City 46 15 15 16 50 52 −2 60 14 Stoke City 46 17 11 18 57 52 5 62 16 Stoke City 46 14 11 21 55 54 1 53 Perhaps the most consistent run of final league positions in Stoke’s history over a period of 5 years? Confirms that this season is the worst points performance since the PL relegation, closely followed by that first season after that relegation. Both bettered by the season when 8 points and 11 defeats in 15 games was the state of affairs prior to MON arrival.

The first 20 mins against Bristol City and the half time lead suggested they were interested, but the going got tough and the players did not have the character to respond. After hitting 51 points on beating Coventry there was debate as to if 72 points would be good enough for play offs if we won all 7 remaining games. Indeed it was… 5th place good enough! One thing is certain. No one was predicting less goals and points in the final 7 games than were achieved on April Fools Day at Coventry!

This is scary and genuinely baffling. We were the better team at Boro too and could’ve easily come away with a win. It’s shocking how when we got safe they went awol when they could’ve stepped on the gas and made the playoffs (aka Villa the season when they reached the playoffs and went up). There’s no way it shouldn’t have happened considering the teams we were stuffing left right and centre. Can’t understand how these so called professionals would operate like that. If we don’t sort this shit out and come out the blocks barnstorming the league next season I’ll have lost all hope! We were on 51 points 7 games ago. Agree but my point is that once we had achieved necessary points for safety the players went on the beach. There were no real injury issues, except Sarkic, the manager pretty much had his strongest team available for those last 7 games.

Joint-18th with a side who were joint-bottom on 15th March. It makes you proud. But we weren't joint 18th we were 16th.

As someone has already pointed out, most of the transfer business is usually done towards the end of August. So that’s 3 or 4 games in plus time for players to gel, get up to fitness and our history of signing injured players. Could be late September before the barnstormers start to perform.

There were no real injury issues, except Sarkic, the manager pretty much had his strongest team available for those last 7 games. We had a decent starting 11 and nothing outside it. We had to rotate because players were being over played and we lost Wilmott and Brown to injury as well as Sarkic. Over and above that you are right - some players checked out. Most if not all of the loanees won't be here next season and most of the contracted players will be gone in the summer or knew they are out of favour and on their way. It's legitimate to blame Neil because he created this situation by reducing the squad size and only bringing in loans in January which was a massive gamble that backfired once he couldn't put out his starting eleven. However he did manage to avoid relegation - which was on the cards in January - avoided the expensive lottery that is the January transfer window and has banked the money for a summer rebuild. He succeeded in what he was aiming to do but also exposed just how high a risk he took in the January window - which to me is a bigger defining feature of the season than the recent poor run. We actually got lucky and are now in a position to capitalise on that luck in the summer.

Lewis Wing for Wycombe at the weekend, what a belter, similar to Wilmot last season

He needed to keep them motivated and up for it after March, he clearly didn’t for whatever reason.

I think we'll find recruitment difficult.
Hard to convince anyone we're likely promo contenders with that record and I can't imagine AN is the most popular bloke in the world. Sounds like he could pick a fight in an empty room.

The desire has to come from the players though, they clearly didn’t have that desire once we were safe and no motivation can change that attitude considering that they aren’t our players and knew they had no future at Stoke. It’s a terrible attitude for players to have because there are still fans to entertain, fans who are paying their wages. Hopefully a lesson learned regarding bringing in too many loanees.

Correct me if I'm wrong but didn't Nathan Jones do something similar. Just basically wrote off the end of a season and allowed the players to down tools in anticipation of getting his team together and having a ful pre-season?
Only for us to be utterly shit for the first 15 games and that manager to lose his job after wasting a Summer and a transfer window. I may be recalling incorrectly but it seems history is destined to repeat itself and we'll be scrambling for a half decent manager again by October.
It should be indefensible for a manager to allow those performance levels from a team regardless of whether the season is all but over or not.

Sounds like he could pick a fight in an empty room. I agree that I think we will find recruitment difficult. It’s hard to see how we will have a team that will be cohesive at the start of next season. This is particularly so, given that most transfer deals seem to happen towards the end of the window. The end of this season has been a disaster and it’s hard to see what sort of players we might attract. I think we are going to be in for a tough 2023/24 season and that Neil is going to be under immense pressure early on if we don’t get off to a reasonable start. Cheers GB

If the season has finished after the Coventry game we would have been in a fantastic position to push on with a fan base largely onside, now if course it is a deeply dischanted fan base hugely frustrated.

Is this one of those questions on the 1% Club where you have to work out the next figure in a sequence of numbers?
The answer's 23rd by the way.

It’s just so disappointing.
