Thompson too. Clearly a good egg. Always tries but is just not up to the standard. Fox can leave for me. No hard feelings. Just not good enough. Jags is done. Would let Laurent leave too if he wanted too. Laurent doesn't seem capable of having an average game Gone from superb to shyte They all have, apart from a few games in Feb and March we've been totally shite all season.

That would be another failure of the manager. Makes sense. Well, if I had to choose, I’d play 4231 with Powell, Brown, Gayle and Campbell. We didn’t sign a target man in the window, so no matter what we play, it’s always going to be hard. That was the failing that I was referring to. When played in the 10 role, Powell has dragged us through games almost single-handedly at times. He’ll be gone in the summer and we will then have to find another player to single out and moan about (it shouldn’t be hard).

Powell will be back at Wigan next season. I doubt it.

I'd love to see the running stats of the team tonight and see where "lazy/doesn't move" Powell was. I'm not saying he played well but he did chase around. At one point he ran pretty back to our area to receive a pass, taking his marker(a centre half) with him. He's creating the space for people to use behind him, they didn't though. No-one bar possibly 2 players did anything though but we have to have the boo boys. It's mad how blinkered people become with certain players. If Powell creates, gets a knock from being fouled and goes off he gets moaned about for being injury prone etc. He plays 90 mins, runs about, chases some(his game isn't about 90 mins of pressing) then because the whole team was pretty much dire he's got to go.

He doesn’t get a free pass for that garbage because it’s not his natural position, he was truly awful.
Time to kill the experiment of playing him up top, although if Brown is out fuck knows what we do?
Still we signed Tuanzabe for a 3 game master class instead of a target man so we are where we are…….

There are loads of posts claiming Powell can play that central striker role - good in the air, holds the ball up etc - but that performance pretty much settled it that he can't. The thing is Powell's best role doesn't fit in with how Neil sets up and he really isn't a Neil type of player. No way he'll be here next season.

I'm not sure I saw Powell win a header all match.
Trying to pass a clear goal opportunity in the first few minutes was just bizarre. It is as though he didn't want to score as he knew it was in front of the Wigan fans & defeat tonight would have all but sank them tonight!

Why in the fuck did he not take the shot when the ball came to him early on in the match? The goal was absolutely begging for it, only for a wank pass to come to fruition instead. I said to my mate at that exact moment that that would sum up the night. Lo and behold, look at the shite that was still to follow. He had the entire goal to aim at, edge of the six yard box, facing the keeper, no part of anyone’s brain should even consider passing it there.

Was wank in fairness. But he is being misused up there. Not worth the arguing as he’ll be a gonna come May.
An enjoyable player to watch who would go with my best wishes for at least having a bit of something about him and giving us some moments of magic when he was on it. It’s a shame there is just so much apparent vitriol towards him.

The thing is Powell's best role doesn't fit in with how Neil sets up and he really isn't a Neil type of player. No way he'll be here next season. The trouble is that for him to play the central striker role you have to have a midfield who can play decent passes which certainly wasn't true today. He is not a player who is going to chase long hopeful balls. If you can tell me one decent pass he received all game I will be surprised. None of those midfield players fit in with how Neil wants to play. You often hear his frustration that we can't play decent balls into the box. Thompson, Celina and Baker were dire and Laurent only marginally better.

He was pretty shit tonight granted, but there were about six players more shit so why a specific Powell thread unless you are just a petty hater trying to justify hating an actual footballer? Bring back POTY JMC eh at least he runs around a lot!
The main issue tonight was bringing in a bucketload of players who haven’t played regularly in months and expecting them to be high tempo high pace and on the ball? Never gonna happen I’m afraid

He's definitely shit. We can agree on that surely? Play football to him and with him and he isn't. Was superb at Coventry when we played football off him. No surprise we go back to hoofing it at him and we get this. The problem with this one is in the dugout. Now I didn’t see tonight’s game so can’t comment but I was at Coventry and superb he was not he did ok. I’ve said it for years it’s people like you who make him overrated

His race is run at SCFC. Better for all if he tries to resurrect what’s left of his career elsewhere.......and he’s not the only one.

He shouldn’t be used as a striker. He’s a number 10. Wank management. He's still better than Gayle and unfortunately we have no one else to play there.Thats down to the previous incumbent.

Overrated I've never thought his once a month flicks warranted a place in the side. That's assuming he was fit to play monthly which he wasn't the hype is actually greater than his ability.

He's certainly managed Powell out of the club effectively here. If people are happy with that then that's fine, but there are supporters of this club that can see what he's doing from a mile away.

Never gonna happen I’m afraid He's not the only only one though. There are loads of other threads, panning the rest. The difference I think with Powell is that he's the type of player that's a maverick, has skill, shithousery, etc, and really should be a firm fans favourite. The fact is, he's a kind of Marmite figure. So to that end, for many he's maybe one of the biggest disappointments we have in the squad, at present.

And that's his prerogative, all managers do it. They fancy certain players, or certain types. One that divides opinion and plays 15 games a season these days, I can get why he thinks he wants better.
