My eldest has a thing for South Korean men; she's getting married to one this year. She had a bit of a fascination with East Asian culture as a teenager and her walls were adorned with posters of K-Pop stars (pre-BTS). She went out with a South Korean while she was at uni, and when she graduated she moved out to Seoul to teach. She met a new chap last year and they’re getting hitched in April (Korean engagements don’t drag on for years like they do here). Clearly, it wasn’t a phase she was going through. South Korean culture is more ‘Western’ than the Chinese or Japanese way of life, and their beauty standards tend to reflect that. Their celebrities are often selected on the basis of having a certain appearance, and there’s a lot of cosmetic surgery goes on to achieve it. They’re generally a bit taller than other East Asians too. The airbrushed image portrayed through Netflix will be feeding the perception of South Koreans as attractive. I expect if all we saw of Occidental culture was through the Hollywood lens, we’d believe that the West was full of beautiful people. A stroll into Longton would soon put you right. Huge amounts of cosmetic surgery going on in Korea. It's got to the point where I am inclined to believe that none of their young stars on TV/Bands/Films are natural. I would not be surprised if 100% of their top young stars have had some kind of surgery to enhance their looks.
