You have to go back to the mid 90s when we struggled with the keeper position. I’d say nearly all the keepers we had in the third tier would be number 1 in our current setup although I stand to be corrected on any of what I’ve just said.
Let’s hope we don’t ruin another promising career.

I know he’s done well at Brum but if Wolves rate Bentley over him, who we apparently wanted, does it suggest he’s not great?! Definitely an interesting character it seems and hopefully he can do well for us. It’s common to allow a young prospect out on loan for regular game time and draft in an experienced understudy isn’t it? Makes sense to me anyway as sub keepers rarely get a look in unless you’re at Stoke, in which case you can expect to play 50% of games. Hopefully this guys good enough to make the number one spot his own for the remainder of the season at least then who knows He’s 24 so hardly a complete youngster and Wolves are struggling and see Bentley as a more imminent challenger. He’s done well in the Championship before so fingers crossed he can be for us too!

He simply can’t be as bad as the others have been surely

Games at Birmingham for a team who finished 6 below us last season. If he comes he could well be excellent……here’s hoping

He previously served as ambassador to the United Kingdom and to Belgium." What the hell was he doing in Grimsby? EDIT Ignore that I've just seen The Athletic article.......... I thought it was a bit fishy until I read the article.

Let’s hope we don’t ruin another promising career. I don't even remember it being that bad in the 90s (Prudhoe and Muggleton?). I don't think there's any argument that goalkeeper has been our strongest overall position for the last 30 years, and the quality in that area has saved (no pun intended) our team from looking much worse on many occasions. Even when it was looking weaker in the Premier League, we quickly got Lee Grant in. I wonder if that's why many fans have been so critical of Bursik, Davies, and Bonham, as we're used to seeing high quality in that position. I haven't been critical, but the 'keeping has been noticeable. Our current predicament coincided with the departure of Andy Quy.

Is that the same Andy Quy who oversaw butlands demise...and of course his coach who developed butlands drop slowly to your left at every penalty against you technique..

Reminds me of Butland at his best watching those clips. Cracking saves, quick to react, good firm claims.

Is that the same Andy Quy who oversaw butlands demise...and of course his coach who developed butlands drop slowly to your left at every penalty against you technique.. Or the same Andy Quy who oversaw Butland's rise to what many were considering England's future #1 until the injury. Begovic's rise too. And others with career-best form at Stoke. Depends how you want to frame it, but the success rate of goalkeepers in Andy Quy's time here was overwhelmingly positive. Quy left around the time Butland's form dipped. I don't want to turn this into another argument about Butland given we should be celebrating a good signing, so it's the last I'll say, but Butland was very good in our first Championship season. He won our player of the year, was in at least one high profile Championship Team of the Season, was in the top 3 goalkeepers in terms of saves made (actually even better, I think it was % of shots saved), and tachyon shared stats showing how many points Butland actually saved us that season. He was way above average as Championship goalkeepers go. I think he may only have made one terrible gaffe that season (and the previous season), but it led to a goal conceded (and probably game lost), which never looks good for a goalkeeper. Definitely not more than Pickford, England's actual #1. Then the following season a couple more mistakes that led to goals conceded, at a time when it seemed every individual mistake by a Stoke player was punished by a goal conceded - not just Butland.

My work colleague is a Blues season ticket holder and he reckons he was the best keeper they'd had for years. He was absolutely gutted when he dislocated his shoulder. A positive sign, surely?
