I am one of the very lucky ones that can say, I saw Pele play in the flesh... against Stoke City. What a player!... what a man! Never saw him play but have met him in person. Throughout my career as a meejah berk I've been fortunate enough to fraternise with countless 'famous' people but very rarely get starstruck. The two notable exceptions however were when meeting Pele and Maradona (not at the same time mind). You just new that you were in the presence of greatness and shaking hands with the great man was an almost quasi-religious experience for me, the football-obsessed adult I'd become having been a football-obsessed child. RIP Edson Arantes do Nascimento

Met him and had my photo taken with the great man at a lunch in Sydney in 2015. A real gentleman who flew to Australia to pay tributes to a retiring TV football presenter. RIP.

There will always be disputes about who was the greatest player of all time but there will only ever be one person who stands head and shoulders above everyone else to represent what was untarnished and good about the beautiful game. Mention Maradona and people will find fault in his character. Mention Messi and they'll do the same. But mention Pele and the whole world will join with you in praising him for being the most beautiful example of everything that was good about the game we all love. RIP Great Man.
OS doffs flat cap to the most wonderful and complete player of all time.

There are very few pluses from getting old, but one is that I am one of the lucky ones able to go to the Stoke v Santos friendly in 1969 and get to see the World's greatest footballer parade his skills on the old Victoria Ground including the moment when he glided to his left past a couple of Stoke defenders in the penalty area and then thumped a left foot shot back across Banksie into the far corner of the Boothen End net.
It also means I was able to watch the first "modern" World Cup with colour TV, a white ball and quality coverage in 1970. It was a magnificent colourful spectacle with the best Brazil team I have seen and Pele as the shining star of that team. (People nowadays are spoiled by the quality and quantity of sports coverage but 1970 really was a quantum leap compared to say the Mexico Olympics just 2 years before).
I guess it is inevitable that the sporting heroes of my youth are fading into history but it is still a sad day when the greatest of them goes.
RIP Pele

Remember the 66 World Cup as a kid He was absolutely slaughtered by hatchet men in every game Remember thinking then heβs probably finished. Then came 1970.
RIP. Pele

I was at that Stoke game too and anybody who could outscore Big John and Jimmy must have been great......he was! The attendance on the Sentnel site says 23,000+. If you look at the accompanying picture the Stoke End looks full and I remember it being rammed. The days of creative accounting? Santos probably took payment in cash! π

Years ago, going through O'Hare airport in Chicago, saw a large crowd surrounding a quiet well-dressed gentleman. Only confirmed later it was Pele, signing autographs during a layover between his flights. There were so many people I couldn't get close, but he was there with a beaming smile for well over an hour. You could tell from a distance that he was 100% gentleman. RIP great one.

Also Denis Smith was told to take it easy on him and not be too rough or they would take him off, but Denis said he couldn't get near him anyway!

My mum still brags about seeing Pele at the Vic. She has absolutely zero interest in footy but even she knows how important he is (and always should be) to the game. After reading that article though, it shows why Edu was so shit for us 10 years ago. To be fair, if he played in '69 as well he must have been about 75 when we had him in the Prem
