Two players got booked today because they were forced into fouls due to Baker's fannying about
He formed an excellent partnership with Allen last season Allen time was up but shocked how poor Baker has been

*due to high bone content from the butcher

You only have to look at his career so far. There’s a reason why he’s never settled anywhere. He’s a total show pony.

I can't remember a poorer performance from a senior player. He made David Oldfield look like Paul Scholes.

Not one corner went more than 2 foot off the ground when we have a nearly 7 foot player waiting for a header

Like taking a race horse and turning it into a £2 a ride children's attraction.
I'd have made him captain in the summer as well, I don't think that's worked out. However, I could guarantee that even I'd get a tune out of him by simply putting him in his best position.

Did an excellent job tonight of what he was told to do. He pretty much man marked Brownhill out of the game, he has become a crucial player through the middle for them which is why they created so little. It is a massive waste of Bakers talent but he did it well. I'll probably get load of people saying how wrong I am etc etc. If you watch the game back you will see how far back he had to drop to mark Brownhill, almost level with Souttar. Whoever’s decision it was to give Baker the role to hold Brownhill’s hand all game was strange to say the least. Totally disrupted the balance of the press on the left hand side. Tymon jumped high to their RB/RCB, Thompson was close following to their RCM leaving a huge gap between Thompson & Baker. The lone striker drops deep into the space and Wilmot had to follow, which he was hesitant to do so and didn’t seem comfortable to, dragging him out of position. When the ball was on our right side it worked well as he was locked onto Brownhill not giving them an option, but on the left it totally disrupted the balance where he should have closed the gap to Thompson, blocking the option into the striker and the right winger tucking in on Brownhill. He’s hardly De Bruyne, not worth disrupting the shape to man mark him

He's basically a poor footballer with a good strike on him.

I've said before on a different thread that aside from Bakers poor performances, the fact Neil's hooking his Captain off during matches, thats definitely twice in recent weeks I can recount is of a great concern to me.
If the managers feeling his on the pitch leader/voice isn't performing then a serious conversation and a decision needs making. Dropping Baker as captain may seem controversial but its better to do it behind closed doors than to keep hauling him off during the match. The release of the armband may assist his performances & I know the next issue would be, who would wear the armband next, but the current set up isn't working and somethings got to change. Jagielka for captain all day for me when he's playing, he could easily carry the responsibility of captaining whilst playing as he's done before at a much higher level than he's currently at.

Needs a couple of games out of the firing line, still has credit in the bank long term as far as I’m concerned.
Definitely a player there, at the moment he’s playing in that no mans land where he can’t set up play from a deep lying position or affect the final third from a more attacking role.
A midfield 3 of Kilkenny sitting and 2 of Thompson/Laurent/Baker either side would surely be preferable to the current set up surely?

Unsure it’s been mentioned already, but does anybody else think the fascination with playing him deeper and deeper into the defence is slowly killing him off. From what I remember he played further up than a DM last year and was pinging in some beauties! Not saying he was the saviour but he was definitely better last season when he played more of a midfield and maybe even attacking midfield role
Edit: Just seen that PrestwichPotter (a couple posts up) words it a lot better than I did

If he can't be arsed then get rid. He isn't Captain material if he's more concerned about himself than the team or club. See Campbell.

He properly hid yesterday. Always made sure there was a man between him and the ball.

The midfield trio as it currently stands is just baffling. I spent most of yesterday just watching that midfield area. For a long time now and going back to O'Neill, when we have the ball we do not seem to play with a midfield at all. Either midfielders are dropping so deep as to be almost with the defence or they are pushed up with the attackers as though we are playing a 5 up front formation from the 1950's. I can't see what we are trying to do and as a consequence our midfield is almost non-existant when we are on the ball. There must have been 9/10 occasions that I can remember when either Fox/Clark/Souttar had the ball and there was not one forward looking pass they could make into midfield. Generally Baker was floating around to try and take a short pass to then only recycle it back to one or other of the defenders. Meanwhile the opposition midfield appeared to be pushed up and ready to pounce on any mistake that the defence were going to make...

We've got to do what we can to get Baker playing higher up as a box to box. Lurking on the edge of the area, looking for pullbacks and getting back on the scoresheet. With this 5-3-2 or 3-4-3 or however you want to shape it, all he's doing is recycling posession and collecting loose balls.

Was saying to my son yesterday, as we attacked both our advanced midfielders kept drifting out onto the wing taking up the space of either clarke or Tynom. We have nothing within the middle of the pitch when we attack maybe a reason baker isnt getting a position to get those shots off. We are so one dimensional get it wide and then put a shit cross in

You're spot on though, they were getting in their way/hiding out there.

I think when we see the best of Tymon was when we manage to get the ball out to him quicker so teams don't get the opportunity of doubling up on him. During the period before Souttar got injured Vrančić would always manage to get the ball out to him so he could carry us up the pitch / get a cross in. We just seem to slow now to get the ball out wide and into good positions for him.

Currently the difference between Stoke under the previous manager compared to this one is that two of our most influencial players in Baker and Powell (3 possibly if you include Tymon) have completely lost their mojo…….

I agree, this might help him to regain the form he had last season. I didn’t go to all the games last season, but from what I saw, he looked like he could have made a decent captain. That’s just from what I saw though, I feel many would disagree. It’s a shame really

We are so one dimensional get it wide and then put a shit cross in Smallbone drifting out wide is the manager’s tactic to try and create an overload down either side. He follows the instruction well. The fact that we still don’t get a decent ball into the box is the mystery. What we need is that other midfielder (Baker) plus the strikers getting onto the end of that play. Brown did get on the end of 2 in the first half on Monday but contrived to side foot it weakly once and was offside for the second. Tymon needs to rediscover the confidence he had last season to take someone on the outside again, at least try to because he doesn’t look like he even wants to attempt it any more. His early balls into the box were key to some of our better moments last year, giving Brown opportunities. Maybe he looks up and sees nobody to aim for? Maybe Brown doesn’t make those runs because he’s shot of confidence?

There were several times on Monday Souttar could have passed to him when he was in space but it didn’t happen. Whether he didn’t call for it or Harry didn’t see the pass I don’t know. It was though so frustrating as he was in plenty of space. Did anyone else notice?
