By looked at it you mean he may not have seen it clearly enough or at all? That's where he needs some help. Oh come on are you telling me you looked at the replay on that and thought 'Nah that's not a penno'? I'm talking about the VAR official btw who looked at both incidents and deemed the softest one a penno not the on field ref who thought neither was. I wouldn’t have given either. The Maguire one was worse, but unless he was a giraffe, he wasn’t going to reach that ball. Awarding penalties from these situations is almost impossible to get right. Who fouls who first, was the ball actually in play at that time? If not, should it be a free kick, penalty or a retaken set piece? They can’t make those calls any better with VAR than without, so they shouldn’t bother. The technology isn’t there. They should just limit it to offsides, open play decisions: diving and reviews of serious challenges.

There won't be many, if any other teams that put 6 past a team, I guarantee that. That says all you need to know about letting this team off the leashes and putting teams to the sword. 9 points from this group is more than achievable. From there we stand as good a chance as anyone. Very very true but conceding 2 v a side like that also a worry. They also hit the woodwork. You must be gutted Cmon admit it

Unless the laws have changed that's a penalty and a yellow card I think his main point is grappling in the box is often 6 and half a dozen and it’s not entirely possible to decide what warrants a pen and what doesn’t do leave it alone and only use VAR for the situations he described. That’s how I read it anyway. Currently they both should have been pens and that’s the problem, the interpretation of what constitutes a foul in that situation.

wow, that was a thrashing. Only issue for England was that Iran scored on pretty much the only chances they had. Stoke. 😋

Excellent start to the tournament.
Winning your opening match takes so much pressure off.
Delighted for Grealish, classy gesture and some much needed confidence.
Rice and Bellingham looks well balanced.

You appear to be saying the wrestling of Maguire didn't warrant a penalty because he wouldn't have reached the ball? Unless the laws have changed that's a penalty and a yellow card I think that the Maguire one was a more obvious penalty and that, if he was closer to the ball, the ref may well have reviewed the decision. The issue with VAR is the laws haven’t changed well enough to fall in line with the technology. That leads to variability, which is what they are trying to avoid. I just wouldn’t use VAR on corners etc in the box as I think that there are too many incidents all happening at once. Their penalty had about 3-4 players grappling that the camera ignored and instead, focused on one shirt pull.

What a good start. If we beat USA it'll provide the chance to rest some phuqqas v Wales.
Saka and Bello were impressive.
All that's left is for people to find ways to belittle it.

I'm glad that we beat the Iranians. Most of the Iran fans were in great singing mood but I did get some abuse from one or two of them gave me some proper shit when they saw me in my England shirt on the way to the game.
Some points from me yesterday.
1. Plenty of empty seats at kick off. What became apparent after about 30 minutes of the game kicking off, all the empty seats were suddenly being filled by locals. What was noticeable was that all the locals coming in at that stage had tickets in their hands. Tickets for this tournament are sent and used through the FIFA app. Putting 2 & 2 together, they are obviously letting locals in for nothing to fill the stadium.
2.The atmosphere was poor but I think that was more down to the setup of the stadium. Not too dissimilar to the Olympic Stadium.
3. The stadiums get a lit bit chilli with the air con
4. Jude Bellingham, what a player. Is the lad really only 19 years of age.
