This just cropped up randomly in conversation today and I was immediately transported back to driving a wrecked lurid green Vauxhall chevette around Hitchin. It was my instructors car and he loved it, my second attempt and passed somehow while playing lottery with the gearbox. Far cry from what you see available today.

My dad had a lurid green chevette and I passed my test in that as well in 1980, cannot remember what the official colour was called.

Passed in my mum's Hillman Imp. A week later, having become the world's greatest driver, I crashed it into the back of a car driven by two nuns who explicably stopped at an empty roundabout.

Ford Capri and a Renault 5. The Capri had very heavy steering and a bit pf bitch to park. The 5 was easy. Bike test was a Honda 125 with shit brakes. I ended up straight into a wall somewhere near James street (steep).

Austin Allegro, my instructors car.
No idea how I passed, fucked up the reversing around a corner and got a couple of highway code questions wrong.
In addition to that I had the legendary horrible examiner at Fenton who apparently never passed anyone first time.

Mini
My first car was a Datson 100A which I was so embarrassed about I refused to drive it!
Ah the folly of my youth!
I wanted something cool like an XR3i or even XR2i 😁
Next bought a Renault Fuego! Much cooler!

That was always the rumour among us learners round here, that you were much more likely to fail towards the end of the month. They had a quota, you see, and only a certain number a month could pass! Sure it was all bollocks but it was funny how many people clung to it, especially when they'd failed! Ford Escort, learnt in a petrol version, instructor turned up in a diesel version, twat! Had an hour to get used to it.

Trying to remember the examiners name, he was legendary at the time, think it was Dimsdale or something similar, he was an ex Police Officer was the rumour.

Was notorious for being 'a tough bastard! "Who did you get?" "Orange" "Tough luck" "Yeah, bastard, I only had two minor faults and he still failed me...." etc. Was regularly overheard in sixth form college!

Learned in a Mk1 Escort which was rear wheel drive in those days (1970) but the instructor turned up in an Austin 1100 saying the escort had gone in for a service.Had 1 hour to get used to the front wheel drive on the Austin before my test.

Passed test (first time !) in the driving instructor's Vauxhall Viva. First car was a Viva. Passed bike test (first time !). Learned at Vale Park and crashed on the car park my first time on the bike, broke the brake lever, and bashed my hip. Had to take HGV Class 3 and then Class 1 for work. Learned at Bassetts at Tittensor - somehow Passed both of them first time as well. Reversing the trailer into the coned area was a nightmare for me and I hadn't been able to do it once during training, but I somehow did it on my test.
