I know we've got a few know-it-alls experts on here so I thought I'd ask... Given recent events I can't help but notice so many people on this forum use the word "fired", I was always under the impression that this was an American phrase & we always used "sacked" instead, am I wrong about that?

Either is perfectly acceptable, as long as whichever you choose is preceded by the words "Michael O'Neill has been.."

Unless you're Vince McMahon, Trump or Lord Sugar the correct term is sacked.

I've been sacked a few times for telling the bosses to "Fuck off!". (I've only been sacked once because I was useless at the job and that's when I was an apprentice moulder at a foundry. They were right to sack me. I hated the job and I was useless at it because I didn't care.) I've also been set on but never hired.
OS.

There was definitely a hierarchy at the last place I worked.
Shop floor staff were 'sacked'. Management were 'let go' while Directors always had decided to either 'take a break' or 'pursue other opportunities'.

Given recent events I can't help but notice so many people on this forum use the word "fired", I was always under the impression that this was an American phrase & we always used "sacked" instead, am I wrong about that? Both British sayings but sacked from the French: The oldest recorded use of the term “fire” in association with losing one’s job by decision of one’s employer comes from Mendip (South West of England). In that case, fire was the consequence of a specific cause (stealing), and was about actually setting fire to the employee’s belongings (who was banished from town, but not set on fire). The Mendip laws of miners were written in the 15th-16th century, so the writing is a bit different from contemporary English Sacked: The probable derivation of this phrase is an allusion to tradesmen, who owned their own tools and took them with them in a bag or sack when they were dismissed from employment. It has been known in France since the 17th century, as 'On luy a donné son sac'. The first recorded English version is in Charles Westmacott's The English Spy, 1825

I got fired from a fancy hotel years ago...was the 24 hour bar man, I was 18. The other bar man who hired me used to go to sleep in an empty room leaving me alone. Unfortunately late night guests like company to drink with and tip extremely well also Is rude to turn large amounts of drink down . You can guess the rest.
They didn't say I was fired, just suspended from the premises indefinitely.

With work hat on it’s dismissed with notice or summary dismissal. Several reasons in law including ‘Some Other Substantial Reason’ which is not widely used but does exist. Reasons include capability due to ill health, gross misconduct, redundancy. That’s not a comprehensive list but it’s late and my covid brain is shutting down.

I got ‘sent down the road ‘ from a well known supermarket for helping the old dears with their trollers rather than stacking shelves. I had the pleasure a few years later of barring the bloke who did the deed from the pub I worked in for no other reason than he was a tosspot.
