Anyone who thinks we’ll have a good season is utterly deluded. MON Reminds me of a Carry on Film I’ll go for Carry on Calamity. Carry on Down the League 😉

Holden looked utterly crest fallen in the post match interview.
It's going to be a long campaign I fear.
Put simply we're rubbish, and getting worse.

Ha yeah, recall us beating Liverpool in a home pre season a good few years back, 1-0 springs to mind, a Stefan Thordarsson free Kick possibly when LFC filled the whole South Stand and also round into the Sentinel Stand aswell! We all thought that was it and we were going to be world beaters after that victory, was another false dawn! Remember beating Valencia one pre season at home aswell! I know its a completely different team now and styles & ambitions are all different to back then and I'm not particularly confident of the upcoming season I must add. But it's to put pre season games into perspective, lose its definitely not the end of the world, win and it in no way means your in for a great season! I remember watching us beat the shit 3-0 with good fellow scoring a worldie chip over barthez. Friendlies mean nothing no injuries and fitness most important Was going to mention that one aswell, was weird wasn't it though that game as I'm sure our season had already started and the league gave us special permission to play in a friendly v Man Utd whose season hadn't started yet! Remember thinking at the time why were Stoke the chosen ones?! & thinking there was more to it! We wore our away kit and Man Utd wore red that match aswell, was all very strange. & a young Danny Pugh played for Man Utd that game!

While I do agree with the opinion (to an extent) that you can't read TOO much into pre season results, I do think you need to look into the details and performance in the game. Pre season is for players to get match fitness, but also for a manager to practice and fine tune what he wants to do in the upcoming season. The worry is that what we've seen so far (more so tonight) has been utterly atrocious. 5 at the back again No creativity No shots on target Awful passing No movement We could well be in for a long season of this is a sign of things to come and I can see it getting hostile very quickly. Nah I do fear you're right mate. Guess how we feel when leaving the Bet365 after the Blackpool match (having already played Millwall of course) will be the only true moment we can start to feel quietly confident or fearful of what's to come given what's been viewed on the pitch and more importantly how many points we're sitting on at that point in time!

Was it part of the Ben Foster deal or was that a different season? Iwelumo scored didn't he also from a clever throw in routine.

Edit...were we due to play them previously pre season and they re-arranged ? Was a fella made his debut for Man U and was never really heard of again. Djemba Djemba seem to remember and one goal going in off Barthez after coming back off the bar. They were honouring some agreement we had and had permission to play us or similar.

MON is fixated on this 5-2-1-2 system, which relies, as all 5-man defences do, on having two flying wing-backs to offer the attacking threat. Tymon is OK at this on the left, but from what I read about Clarke, he sounds more of a traditional RB. Duhaney is a League Two footballer at best, and God only knows why we signed him.
We also have no natural left-sided CB (unless either Forrester or Taylor are?) while the ball not sticking up-front is going to be the same problem it was last year. Don't get me started on the goalkeepers.
In the next 2 weeks, we need to sign:
a new GK (first team) a proper RWB (compete with Clarke) a LCB (first team) an ACM (cover for Powell) a target man (first team)
That's half a fucking team.

Early days. Let’s judge at the end of August when everyone’s in. I’m sure we’ll have a few players coming in. Yes of course I’d rather see us winning these sort of games but primarily they’re to gain fitness and for players to get to know each other.

It's not really the system. If he switched to 4231/433 we'd still need: GK RB competition Powell replacement/competition Target man Wide left player (assuming McCarron isn't up to the level yet and/or competition) Still half a team. We're short everywhere all over the park.

But surely these games are also for a manager to get his team playing to his "system", and from what we've seen so far (as in previous seasons) the system doesn't work, we don't have the players to play it, and the manager seems at a loss how to change things when "Plan A" clearly isn't working. Not long till the start of the season and we look a complete mess. If things don't start well I can see the mood in the stadium turning quite quickly. A big couple of weeks in the transfer market coming up.

Only fair to see what the squad looks like come August, but we need 4-5 additions to the squad of a quality we haven't seen yet if we're going to threaten even the top 10.
And, let's face it, that's unlikely
Our hand will be revealed when we see which striker turns up. If it produces a groan, rather than a ripple of excitement, it'll be reasonably hard to find the pulse of our 22/23 season

Is it a flawed system or were the supporters wrong? Most, if not all of us pointed to this summer as being the 'big rebuild' when we finally got ourselves clear of the big earners and were allowed to spend a bit more. It seems to me, and to be fair it did back then, that this summer has just made everything so hard because of the level of rebuild required coupled with a tightening of the finances. To be honest, I can see most summers being like this for the foreseeable future until if/when the rules on FFP ease a bit and allow clubs to spend a bit more. Looking at clubs like Preston, it seems once you are in this dreaded financial tailspin, it is very hard to break out of.

My mate rang me last night coming back from the game and agree entirely in his summing up after the game. He’s (MON) tried and tried again and unexplainably trying again with a flawed plan, the players aren’t the problem it’s him. Face facts here ON won’t change, 100% he should of been sacked at the end of last season but insanely we’ve persisted with the idiot. As another posts states “Sleepwalking into relegation” is bang on but we’re more like galloping now, Blackpool will be interesting as 100% they’ll batter us, there’s just no plan to our game whatsoever.

Blimey I’ve been a bit down about prospects before - now I’m suicidal 🙂 You are probably right though but I’m sure if we are going to live in this financial purgatory there are other (perhaps more basic) systems to adopt that better use the calibre of player we are now sadly getting used to.

The answer to that would be to change the manager if push came to shove and try a different approach, however given how cute we're having to be in the player market, I am under no illusions that should we make a change this coming season then we would be looking at Holden and/or the newly appointed O'Shea. For me, and I'm a stuck record on this one, we are desperate for fresh blood and a new approach at the top - as painful as that is to some.

There is no correlation between how well you do in pre-season and the season ahead, be despondent about our chances by all means but not based on a glorified kick about in the park..........

My despondency is based on the way we kick it about the park. By the sound of it we are doing it exactly the same way as previously and having exactly the same problems. Being told that we struggled because a team ‘pressed us’ just doesn’t cut it any more. Nor does saying we were the victims of stupid mistakes at the back. We been there and done all these things before. We needed a positive change this season and yes it’s too early to tell for sure that this hasn’t registered with the management but there’s nothing yet to suggest it has.

Yes we did, but the year before we showed lots of progression. We have shown nothing but a downwards momentum in 5 years, and with this current squad will be looking downwards not upwards once again this season. Only Laurent improves our side at the moment.
We need at least 4 new players in our starting 11 that will improve the side. Not squad players, not ageing has beens, not kids who haven't played - we need a number of upper-Championship players but our finances dictate that we can't get them in. We are now paying for poor leadership and I can't see it reversing any time soon.

Not that bothered with the result tbh, I'm wondering what part of it was experimental, seemed more like the same set up we've been using for a while just with different players, a few of which we already know aren't good enough, Thompson, Duhaney etc.

Watching the highlights (and I only got as far as the two goals and that was enough) I had two thoughts : 1. DWP has got to get a lot stronger when not in possession. First goal he should have been first to a loose ball and second he failed to control a ball with his back to goal allowing an Accrington player to steal possession and counter attack while he sat appealing for a foul. I know referees sometimes let rough house tactics carry on but what is the point of sitting on the ground moaning? You are no use to your team there and he isn't going to change his mind. Powell does it a lot too. 2. What is the point of going back in several passes to the gk from the kick off? I know we haven' t got a target man to hit it to but surely the first man to receive the ball should move forward and at least get the ball near their box. Instead we end up losing the ball near our box with them streaming forwards. I know it didn't lead directly to the second goal but it gave them the impetus to get forward.
