I just cannot get interested in international football these days. And since it ruined Jack Butland's career, my interest lessened even further. Cost us a superb keeper, never the same after that injury.

Well that was fucking awful to watch.
Southgate needs his bags packing. His football is dreadful to watch.

I like international football in tournaments but the rest, even the qualifying is so watered down you’re basically looking at 2 months over 4 years when it’s actually worth watching. The original Nations League was a decent concept but they’ve fucked about with that as well to make it far less entertaining. There’s literally no respect for the football fan. It’s like we should be honoured to see these overpaid fuckers to prance around having a practice game!

Based on your reports and the scoreline I'm glad I didn't see it.
I have had great hopes of us winning the WC this time, but it sounds like the players need a rocket up them.
Southgate needs to sort out who really wants to win it, and in the words of one of the players who won in 66 "is prepared to run through brick walls for the rest of the team".

Fraser Forster as a second choice worries me. I don’t like Pickford, but he did decent enough in the Euros.
We just feel one or two key players away from World beaters.
I don’t see us winning a World Cup without a World class defender and goalkeeper.

It just shows some of these players are amongst the luckiest bastards in the country

Well that was pretty poor, the crowd was so bored started making their own entertainment I fookin hate Mexican waves and paper aeroplane throwing as well.
I was sat just behind the commentary positions, Lee Dixon, Alan Smith etc and could see on their replay screens in 39 seconds it was a penalty, why does it take VAR so bloody long

It’s the other end that concerns me, we have so many talented forwards who are hopelessly out of form Form can return quickly though for the forwards. Especially given the weird timing of the next World Cup. We need Kane to get back to his scoring ways (which he has in part), Grealish needs to start excelling, but Mount has been decent and so has Foden. I think there’s a lot of quality up front that many of the favourites could be worried about. However, Pickford wouldn’t get into a top 6 team and neither would any of that defence. Form is very important, but I worry more about the general ability of the defensive set up. Would not be surprised to have Phillips and Rice in there again to protect them.

Friendlies are just that. At least GS hopefully got some benefit, the wing backs playing 5 at the back is dull and the creativity is nil. Shaw passed back every time he got the ball bar his goal.
No new player showed enough to be encouraged they could offer something to challenge the probable squad for the World Cup.
Only when both teams made multiple subs and England changed the system did we have any control in midfield once Rice supported the invisible Henderson got on the ball.
The awful bored crowd and the mexican wave for tourist is one reason i have not been to an England friendly in about 15 years.

In tournaments it is always our defence that let's us down.
We have qualifying matches in very weak groups, play friendlies, use second string players etc. so when we get to a proper competition and meet a really good team we get found out because of lack of stiff practice by our defenders.
The last Europeans was the first time we went all the way, and came back from a losing position for a very long time, which showed some character.
Southgate is brave enough to keep trying different players, but he has to be brave enough to drop those who are not producing no matter how big a name they are. Ramsay and Clough worked on the principle of picking the strongest team, not necessarily the best players. Furguson could be harsh in dropping and getting rid of players.

There is no reason, with the players at his disposal, Southgate can’t settle on 433. The best formation as standard

But even then, when a player is outclassed, it shows. I just think it’s rare for a team to win a major trophy without having a spine of World class players. You don’t need 11, but you often need 3-4 spread amongst the squad.

Why wouldn't they? One problem is many people still have an unrealistic view on England's international stature. A semi and a final in consecutive tournaments are heady days indeed. And running 🏃♀️ through a brick wall is an honourable notion but at times it's more productive to walk around it.

We have an amazing aray of talented young players however I’m not convinced GS is the man to get the best out of them. He’s more of a statesman than a manager / coach and always plays it safe. I don’t think Henderson’s a bad player but there’s no way he should still be a factor in CM especially when there’s so many other options around.

Come.world cup time he won't be if all players are fit, Phillips and rice will play with JWP behind them on the bench and Hendo. At least he's got experience of playing in big games with Liverpool. He's probably our 4th choice centre midfielder as it stands.
