Thought chester might have gone Who did you think would take on an 30+player with injury issues which need managing, can't play two games a week, on a high wage and recently seems to have lost any footballing ability?

We’ve got enough players centrally for him not to feature there and given he is actually a winger or a wide forward let’s use him there. Where does it say that "he is actually a winger"? Just because he played his first few matches for the u23s as a winger, because we had Varian and Norton central and wide left, doesn't mean he is doomed to play there forever, does it? It didn't take Rooster long before he realised DWP was better centrally and the goals kept flowing. I'm not sure we have a better instinctive and intelligent central striker with pace and a great eye for goal than DWP, not in the short long term anyway. I don't expect DWP will be here for many years, but he'll be here longer than the Villa loanee - unless we're already planning to sell him in the summer. Granted I don't know the exact formation we'll be playing and who does what of the new players, but I do know that DWP is more an Ian than a Shaun of that clan. He’s mainly played as a wide forward/winger for the 23s.

Agreed. The wide men in a front 3 aren't really wingers - they are really second strikers. Last season when Campbell was playing well before his injury he played both on the left and the right of the central striker (Fletcher) in various games. No one claimed he was a winger - he was clearly a second striker - or wide forward if you prefer that term. Recently both SWP and JPB have played as second strikers or wide forwards, not wingers - I would expect they will continue to feature in those positions (rotating with Campbell) probably with Maja as the central striker. The problem when we use "wide" players is that they get saddled with defensive tasks, meaning they are short when it comes to forward work. Who's SWP? DWP's dad!

Deciding on what you think might be the best eleven is irrelevant to the reality and nature of our weekly challenges. It is not about what our potential best eleven is! It is all about how good our squad of players gels and how they all are willing to work for the good of the club. A manager cannot put out his "best eleven" for every single match. I just hope we can stay clear of any more serious injuries so that MON can continue to move this club forward without falling foul of FFP.

I appreciate this thread is about our ‘best’ team, and I’d agree with going for a back four, but… Jagielka Wilmot Harwood Bellis Moore Chester Five centre halves, with one being brought in yesterday, points towards MON wanting to use a back three with wing backs to me. You would have to hope that MON has finally realised how much of a liability Chester really is both in a 3 and a 4 - so 2 of Jagielka, Moore, THB, Wilmot for me with Will Forrester to jump into contention if we get an injury or revert to the 3 - Moore is one we could potentially get in cheap in the summer due to being out of favour at Reading so we would be looking at Jagielka, Moore, Wilmot and one or both of Taylor and Forrester with Jagielka being phased out when Souttar returns/after the world cup.

I would include Brown in the games where high energy pressing needed, especially while Maja gets match ready. Vrancic is clearly a great midfielder but might need to rotate with Allen and Thompson too. But in terms of a side I'd like to go and watch, Bayern's one is pretty close. Our reserve XI quite decent: Bonham Duhaney Wilmot Moore Fox Clucas/Thompson Sawyers Allen Brown Fletcher DWP/Sima Do you plan to sell Powell to a Russian club? No he's just not in the reserve XI?

Bursitk (when fit) Smith (or Wilmot ) Harwood-Bellis Jagielka Tymon (or Fox) Baker Allen Powell Philogen-Bedace Brown (or Maja) Wright-Philips
Anything except a back three will be an improvement.
That lineup barring injuries gives us a good chance at a run for sixth place

Wilmot has to play for his development and potential transfer fee and for crying out loud (not aimed at you, Rob) Wilmot is not a right back! THB will have to play because I’d imagine we’ve given Man City such guarantees. I doubt Jagielka has been bought here just to provide a good egg in the changing room as his record at Derby would suggest and then there’s the new lad. I’ll be surprised if we don’t see a lot of the back three/five.

I genuinely have no idea what our best team or formation is going to be after that window. I can give a list of my personal favourite players and best guesses but that's as far as it goes. Think I'll just shut up and see what happens. Should be fun seeing how this develops - and I suspect what ends up gelling as our best team will be way off anything I could come with at the moment.

Bursik Smith THB Jagielka Tymon Baker Allen JBP Powell DWP Maja I like. Prefer Thompson to Allen though. Best situation is Thommo and Maja work out, basically solving CM/CF for next season. Then keep cycling Brown and Campbell on so they're raring to go and replace JPB next year.
