If Batth had relatively pacey defenders around him, he’d be perfectly fine. There’s no way we should be looking to “solve” two defender positions in one window anyways. Central defence requires understanding as a unit, bringing in two new players to a back five will hobble us for a while, which won’t likely pay off half way through a season. The pace aspect doesn't bother me. His passing does. He negates the system totally. Batth is an old school no nonsense defender who although limited with the ball brings commitment, desire, leadership and until recently 5 clean sheets out of 7 I believe. Right now he is not only the best option either side of ball playing centre back's but the only option. I actually find it refreshing to see a centre half actually being a centre half and doing something radical like tackling and heading..........

Will we be signing this player or is it just paper talk?

Will we be signing this player or is it just paper talk? Percy is reliable so if he says it's happening it's usually happening.

But it reduces massively as an issue if he's got players either side of him that he can pass to who CAN play football. And if this new lad does come in that will be the case with him and Wilmot. And also if we have a midfielder who actually comes looking for the ball (and Thompson strikes me as that player) then he would have another option. As long as he offloads to these players asap and doesn't dick about it won't slow our transition down too much and he can concentrate on doing what he does best ie defend. So until we can get a player in the middle who can defend and play football, either Souttar back or a replacement in the summer, then as far as I'm concerned it will do for now. Teams still target him though and its easy to do. It hinders what we can do with the ball and MON will still have to go away from the possession game he wants to play. I don't deny it remains an issue but as I explained the issue is lessened considerably when he has footballers either side of him and potentially in front of him as well. For that reason I don't think we will need to dispense with the possession game. I think we will comfortably 'make do' until the summer with the help of this signing.

I'd keep playing 4 4 2 with Batth and this new guy in the centre. I also think Wilmot had a decent game at right back so I'd stick with him too. I'd go with this team on Sunday if the players I pick are ready to play.
..................Davies................... Wilmot.......Batth......THB..........Fox .............Allen.....Thompson........... Ince...............................Doughty ...........Campbell...Fletcher............
Unsure if Thompson and Fletcher will make it, but hope they will. I also presume Vrancic is out for this game?

The pace aspect doesn't bother me. His passing does. He negates the system totally. Then he just needs to be told to pass the ball sideways, or better still Allen should recognize this limitation and come deep to collect the ball from him. He doesn’t need to make a defence splitting pass, he just needs to give it to a player nearby. Perhaps Allen could be the solution. Then again he may just draw their midfield on top of a panicky Batth. At the moment our opposition are making a pass to Wilmott a bit dangerous, so Batth is being forced to pass it to his left to Fox or Tymon. This results in all our attacks and corners being on our left side. If Fox is not playing then Tymon comes deep to receive it, meaning no more runs at the full back. Our attackers prefer inswinging crosses from our right which they are not getting. Instead they are getting outswinging corners from Vrancic. At the start of the season Wilmott was feeding Smith in an advanced position who was putting in decent crosses. We've hardly seen an attack down our right side since Powell got injured. As a result we are easy to set up against.
