Still think we have some way to go as there is a fine line which leads to bookings. The time wasting bookings were given purely by the ref reacting to their fans. We need to learn to give it a couple of minutes between each time wasting/break of play rather than doing it continually. I found it a little too much yesterday, not because of what they were doing, more a case of it was being done naively and without noting the reaction to the crowd which led to the bookings; they were inevitable. Need to get smarter at it, but encouraging signs in what is now a pre requisite in winning games sadly.

If the fiasco of Cardiff had never happened I actually think we could well have lost those last 2 away games.I certainly don't think we'd have won both. So every cloud... The Cardiff capitulation might end up proving to be the wake up call we needed to get a bit smarter this season.

Teams experienced in time wasting come to Stoke and know exactly how far to take it without getting booked. Nor do I want us to become a team with a reputation for time wasting or feigning injury. Powell and Fletcher sitting down for the trainer to come on are enough, we don't need any more. I hope Luton and Blackpool were just a case of needs must and evidence that we have worked on it in training. I hate the thought of going to a home match and watching us waste time and sit back once we score. There is a time for pressing for a second or even a fourth and that's what we need to learn. I wonder if in hindsight MON regrets telling them at half time against Cardiff that if they got a third they could go on and win by 4 or 5. They certainly seemed to decide to forget about defending and commit too many players forward. Nor do I want us to take it into the corner flag at every opportunity. I hate that even in the last few minutes. What I want us to do is play safe, short passes sideways, forwards, backwards if necessary to keep possession and frustrate the opposition. I don't mind at all the bookings we receive for stopping the opposition breaking quickly. It stops the momentum and breaks up the play especially when the referee decides to talk to a player or book him. We do need to become a bit more subtle in the way we go about our game management. It sounds as if yesterday we were very blatant.
