Ha, puts me in mind of a former job where this woman who worked in the office relentlessly sent emails to everyone to donate money for seals, dogs, dolphins, you name it she was on it. One day I was talking to her and she explained she was going on an adventure holiday. I said “what you doing, seal clubbing?” She never spoke to me again🤣 Is that why it was a former job?

You lucky, lucky bastards.
She still has the air conditioning running AND a small, self contained air cooler. She does have the good grace to turn off the portable if we’re trying to watch the telly.
Im looking to find somewhere for the winter Georgia /Florida way…….and maybe a meat locker in Chicago for her.

Still not had the Central Heating switched on and hopefully will get to December before doing so.
Thankfully the weather has been mild but the wife is constantly complaining she works and is entitled to be warm, for me she can add another layer of clothing.

Turns out I found out this week mines broken. I have one of those Nest controllers and the Heat Link failed. Even more surprising Google are sending BOXT around to fix it free of charge! If anyone else has one click the link in the app before calling a heating engineer.

For years I was operating under the assumption that the cheaper rate for electricity was 10:30pm to 7am. I don’t know why I thought that but found out it’s actually 12:30am to 8am, which is worthless for 95%+ of people I’m sure.
But I’m an extreme night owl so run the washing machine at 12:30am, will batch cook after 12:30am, and put the heating on in my lounge/kitchen (it’s all one room as I live in a flat) for an hour or so in the early hours whilst I finish work. That’s the only room I heat really (might put radiator on in bedroom for half hour before sleep) but the lounge needs to stay warm as it’s where I work / I have an aquascape and, despite being heated, if the temperature in there is too low then the heater can’t get it up to 22/23 degrees.
I do feel like 12:30am to 8am for the cheaper rates is a bit cunty but I kind of make it work for me. When it gets proper cold though I’ll just bite the bullet and heat outside of those hours.

On a call yesterday with a few folk and discovered just me and one other person haven’t switched the heating on. Mind you everyone else were just wearing t-shirts. I was wearing my Stoke hoodie. We reflected that those of us of a certain age had grown up in houses without central heating and can remember ice forming on the inside of bedroom windows. Have we become soft. I mean, it’s not that cold just now. Anyway, anyone else still holding out and just adding a layer of clothing to keep warm? You bits of kids dont know the meaning of cold ! We used to huddle round the freezer with the door open to keep warm ! ( we didnt really - but my nans outside bog in winter was sometimes a challenge ) I remember my dad pouring kettles of boiling water down the outside bog when it froze. Reckon he must've spilt a bit one night cos me arse froze to the seat! I used to like the ice on the inside of the bedroom windows, it was like intricate patterns like leaves, I remember thinking Jack Frost must be some kind of abstract artist

Which supplier are you with? As while there are a few Time of Day tariffs around the majority in the UK are flat rate. Certainly nearly all Standard Variable Tariffs are.

Mine's with Bulb (soon to be Octopus so who knows) it's about 10p cheaper at night. I think it's because I have a dual meter though. The daytime is dearer than perhaps it could be mind you.

Got down to minus 1 here in Devon last so did full power trial on log burner. Have done some burning but not like last night. Bungalow was toasty and we’ve bought one of them little fans that sit on top that gently spreads the warmth around all rooms. Currently 22 degrees in lounge and dining room but rest of bungalow 18 degrees and Mrs is drying washing indoors as well. Great thing is that all the logs and coal are paid for the central heating comes on for one hour to take chill off at 7am if temp is 16 degrees or less which has happened last couple of mornings.

The thermometer in the living room was reading 13.7C when I got in this evening, so I am afraid that I finally decided it was time to turn on the central heating. My excuse is that I wanted to check whether any of the radiators needed bleeding. 30 minutes was enough to get it up to 16C and bleed a couple of the radiators before turning it off again. For some bizarre reason, there is no heating in the bathroom of my flat. For the last 5 years every summer I tell myself that I must get a radiator fitted and every winter I realise I still haven't. Normally I rely on the heating in the flat below acting as underfloor heating for my bathroom but the inconsiderate ***** got himself evicted a couple of months ago and the flat is currently empty. The one upside is that you wouldn't believe how quick you can take a shower in a cold bathroom.

I sleep better when it's cooler but it's a bit awkward stacking up the blankets so she gets a layer or two more than me.

Not had ours on for more than 25 minutes yet. The energy overlords can fuck right off if they think I'm contributing penny one to their bunga-bunga parties.
I've recently bought x2 full tracksuits to wear around the house however. I've told everyone that it's to keep warm during the cost of living crisis but I've really bought them so I can walk about the gaff doing authentic Savile impersonations.
How's about that then?

I didn't know that about 18C in the house generally, I turned our thermostat down to that in September and so far it's been fine. Feels colder than normal but it's easy enough to deal with by putting on another layer or getting a blanket. Like lawrieleslie said, having a woodburner helps to keep the living area toasty, then a cooler bedroom isn't so bad once you're in. That said, it really hasn't been cold at all yet.

It astonishes me in this age of global warming and climate change that people find it difficult to turn down their thermostat a few degrees and leave it off a little longer than usual 🤷
Speaking as someone who has had home working foisted on them we've used the log burner for 2 to 3 hours a night and used the boiler for heating literally two or three half hour sessions just to keep it ticking over.
Insulate your property, maximise solar gain where you can and don't sit around in a t-shirt.

Kids today don't know the meaning of cold, I remember one winter when the flame on the gas cooker froze. 🔥 I absolutely hate analogies like this. Yes we all know that happened but it was decades ago. It just should not be happening in 2022, society is supposed to move forwards not back. But yes, houses shouldn’t be like furnaces either (like my in laws is)

Get yourself one of these. Mine is 60+ years old and unlike rubber hot water bottles, they don't perish or leak and they even stay warm longer nowadays when used with a duvet than they used to in the days of sheets and blankets. But seriously, it is bonkers that in the 3rd decade of the 21st century we have turned the clock back to a time where people are struggling to afford to keep their homes even reasonably warm.
