Not sure it will stop the delays. Players go down, not just to waste time, but rather to slow the game down and the momentum of an opposition that's chasing the game.

But it's not though. On average, in professional football, the ball is in play for just UNDER 60 minutes, for the other 30 minutes the ball is dead. Therefore when a game kicks-off at 3pm on a Saturday it will finish at 4.45pm, save for any injury time (of course there won't be any injury time under the new rules). Under the new ruling, the game would kick off at 3pm, the ball would still be in play for 60 minutes and still be out of play for 30 minutes and would still finish at 4.45pm. It's exactly the same. Indeed, if the clock was to go for 90 minutes, then the match wouldn't finish until 5.15pm! So why change it then if it’s the same. Also what about games where the ball doesn’t go out that much You'll have to ask them. I haven't said that I advocate it, rather I've just explained that it isn't becoming any shorter.

Also what about games where the ball doesn’t go out that much Because it's not the same. At present the ball can be in play for a period of time dependent on the situation/circumstance. If arsenal are winning, most of the game goes to rolling around and finding ways to deviate time from the ball bring in play (an example) this could theoretically be anywhere between 20-30 minutes per half. At amateur level referees rarely add on time and games can be pathetically managed, it happens every week at professional level so no surprise there. This change rewards teams for keeping the ball in play, as time is limited and stopped every instance that it is not in play. Rolling around will inevitably break up play and give rest time, but it will also provide the opposition to plan more, communicate more, change more? (Theoretically). It changes the mindset as there is no more 'wasting time'. It could be called game management but combined with 5 minutes off for a yellow, it becomes very very risky. I like the sound of these changes together particularly. Unlimited subs -roll on roll off subs? It's about time they introduced this to be honest.

There is no justification for that. Football is about game management. If you can’t win it in the current set up, find another sport to ruin. I can’t imagine that any of these trials will work, barring perhaps the stop the clock. A lot of people around the world will get angry and either stop watching, or protest. Imagine creating unlimited subs. You’d literally just sign a player who could just throw the ball far or take a great corner, then sub him back off immediately. Delap would make a fortune. You’d essentially just have a special teams section of the bench. I feel that the way FIFA want to take football is down the path of American sports. Advertisement breaks everytime a ball goes out of play, which means stop the game and wait until they finish. I don’t mind VAR, I don’t mind constant changes to an offside rule to try and find a fair medium, I can’t abide attempts to change things like this. Screw FIFA.

The powers that be need to deal with the reasons why we only get 60 minutes game time.

Why not go the whole hog and turn it into the NFL. 60 minute match takes 3 hours to complete. We can have 4 x 15 minutes quarters with a 30 minute pop concert in between each quarter. And fans can hold placards up with 'Fuck off Wenger' on them.
Over 150 years with little or no change to the great game and in the last 10 years we've had VAR, European super league, stupid offside rule changes, etc.
Fuck off and leave the beautiful game alone.

The yanks wanted 3 30 minutes periods. years ago, it's so they sell more pies & beer during the breaks. Was advertising purposes during the WC and wasn't the Yanks as such just a suggestion from Brian.... forget name. Was never considered. Alan Durban sent a similar suggestion to FIFA when our manager. Larger goals etc so goals per game would increase hugely

Fair point but when teams are let’s say one up how many times do you see players heading for the corners to waste time or pass it around forever in there defensive line that is all time wasting. Whilst you come out with some good explanations the roll on roll off subs would be farsicle and don’t agree

I feel like changes are often tried to be introduced to meet new markets.
Americans don’t have the patience for football typically, so that it doesn’t sell as well over here is a problem for those trying to make more money.
What they don’t understand is that few in Europe want an American style game. So you’d lose the market (and the tradition) here to gain one in a country where it’s never going to be the main sport of interest. I can’t imagine that they will get more interested in countries like India either.

I didn't time anything, and it was only a perception on my part, but watching a re-run of the '66 World Cup Final recently, it struck me how much time the ball remained in play.
Very few fouls, but there was no rolling round so the free-kicks were taken straight away, and what throw-ins, corners or goal-kicks there were were also taken straight away with no posturing for 30 seconds each time for effect or classic photos.
Seems obvious to me that we're being more and more short-changed nowadays.

What about the players running to corner flags and tippy tappy in there back line they would find other ways to waste time The ball is in play so not much can be done about that apart from the opposition winning it back. Time wasting hardly a new thing in football. Liverpool were masters at the passing backwards and forwards to the keeper in the 70s. Before the back pass rule the ball may have been in play more but so much time was killed.

Definitely agree with the time taken to take free kicks, corners, throw ins etc. The lack of fouls though I think is driven more by the fact that refs were far more lenient (+ the average guy wasn’t a cheat). In my opinion, knuckling down on fouling has been a good thing for the game. Players should be more protected than they were in years gone by. It’s just a shame that they abuse that protection!

I can see the half time results being something like : Forest 1-1 Cardiff (latest score after 24 minutes) Sunderland 0-1 Hull ( oh they're already into the second half there) Stoke 10 - arsenal 0 HT Brentford 0-0 Swansea HT Bournemouth 1-1 Barnsley ( latest score after 19 mins) Rotherham 4 - 0 Derby ( halfway through the second half)
All the kick off times would be different in each fixture for the second half. It just wouldn't work 🤷♂️

All crap ,pointless . Throw in with your feet. Is that sit on your bottom. Put the ball in between your feet. Lift your legs in the air. Move your legs backwards and forwards.release the ball.? I assumed they meant it would be the same as now but you stand on your hands and throw it in with your feet. There's clearly a "more jobs for circus folk" campaign in play here.

I played league Basketball in my prime and the stop clock idea is great.
And, for those of you worried about 30 minute halves, I think you'll find that with a stop clock system the entire game may be well over ninety minutes and all of it actual play action, not watching rolling around being treated!!!

Good point. Initially I was disappointed with any changes but that makes sense. The only issue would be in how this would translate to the grassroots sport. It's easy to enforce with a 4th official timekeeper. The beauty of football is it's relatability from the elite to the Sunday league. This is why VAR has to be phased out
