Will he stay for the Europa Conference League is the next question? I’m sure they drop into that with a defeat.

That season was more down to Suarez than it was anyone else. And he still lost the title, regardless of how close he came. After which he got worse, and worse, until he got sacked. He looked a good appointment on paper. In reality, he turned out to be a poor one. Come on, I agree with a lot of what you say but he patently did well to nearly win the league with them and it was down to a lot more than just Suarez. Sturridge, Gerrard, Coutinho and Henderson, I’d say.

They never convinced defensively, it was the whole SAS thing that people raved about that season, and rightly so. It was an okay side on the whole (certainly not a title-chasing one), with some serious star quality up top. Without it they returned to fighting just to qualify for Europe altogether. He was responsible for two-thirds of that star quality though. Plus Coutinho. It was a title-chasing side for that one season, and the closest they'd come in about 25 years. It was a good achievement. He squandered it the next couple of years through some appalling transfer business but deserves credit for the season when they did challenge. Nobody expected them to.

A slip from winning the league a mess? Can we have that mess? It’s all relative to expectation that is. Someone offers Stoke 2nd place then we’d take it and run. The likes of Liverpool should be regularly winning titles. Are you on a wind up? Liverpool were nowhere near winning a league title for over 20 years until that season. Joe Allen was in the Euros team of the tournament where lowly Wales got to a Semi final. He played over 90 times for Liverpool, hardly a bit part player, in a team that you believe should be title challengers. Sorry mate but you’re trying to make a square peg fit here and it makes no sense.

That tends to happen when clubs buy better players..it happens quite a lot. Replacing ones that aren’t good enough..... He was deemed good enough for a couple of seasons then replaced with better which happens a lot with teams like Liverpool.

For the club, it has now become a case of managing his departure and maximising the transfer fee. People whose judgment on the finer details of the market is to be trusted have suggested the figure McCann would command if he moved to England is constricted because he isn’t a goal-scoring midfielder of the David Turnbull or John McGinn-type. It’s not a theory I subscribe to but I’m not buying or selling football players. Holding their nerve until January to see if the Northern Ireland international starts finding the net with the regularity of early 2020 would be a big risk for Saints. But it could bring even greater reward. It’s one of many factors that will need to be weighed up from the position of control Saints are in.

Have we been linked with any other Scottish-based player in recent weeks?
(crafty deflection from the Scottish-born NI international there, MON)

It'll be interesting on the press conference video to see if he actually does make the very crafty distinction between "players in Scotland" and "Scottish players" .

Unless he’s referring to waiting for a Garner decision before pursuing McCann.

I can't see there is any way we could afford McCann after spending money on Surridge and Wilmot.
