O'Neill did a brilliant job last season and is steadying the ship through turbulent waters. We don't need a foreign manager. He steadied the ship and we’ve gone shite again. It we don’t see a dramatic improvement at the start of next season we’ll be in serious shit. Completely dismissing the job he did last season are we? In fact, you don't need to answer that because I've seen it written down in many posts on here (not specifically you), where things like "any decent manager could have done what O'Neill did" or "we should be in the top 3 with this squad" have been written by the ungrateful fuckers on this board, who, if it wasn't for O'Neill would be watching 3rd division football this season.

And what about Swansea? The nationality of a manager means sweet FA, its the strategy and confidence you have in your players, especially young ones. How many times this season has MON seen his arse and put out a defensive team or formation full of has bins leaving youth on the bench or at home. Brenda Rodgers is another who's not afraid give young players a chance and look at them in the PL. You’re still drunk from last night right? Or this is meant in an ironic comedy way which I’m not getting? MoN has played more youth than any other manager in the division and all over the pitch has introduced our youth players. Since MoN who were the last academy lot to come through? - Wilco/dicko

No, I agree he did a great job last season keeping us up but I think that’s as far as it goes for him. He isn’t the man to get us in the play offs.

A manager should be appointed based on the ideas they have and whether their philosophy matches the club's. Appointing a foreign manager on nothing more than a whim is just silly. You might as well say, all of our recent managers have had hair, let's appoint a bald guy next. The big point here is when you say if their philosophy matches the clubs, we don’t seem to have one same with our approach to signing players, the best example would be under Jones when we were supposed to be after James Justin, granted were weren’t going to compete with a decent premier side, but J J was a young pacy attacking fullback full of energy, we couldn’t get him so it appears our second choice was Ward a 34 year old left back who’s Legs had gone, so basically the total opposite, there doesn’t seem to be any rhyme or reason to anything we do, and that’s what needs to change.

This hits the nail on the head really. As a club, we don't really seem to have any clear philosophy or strategy - both on the pitch or off it.

Brentford will be interesting, especially if they fail again in the play offs. Foreign coach or not, their strategy up to now has been to hoover up the best talent in the next bracket down in leagues all across Europe. Post Brexit this will be impossible to do with permits. I notice they've shifted their recruitment towards more british players recently. Dru Yearwood from Southend was one of the first and he's already left permanently to go to NY Red Bulls. Since then they've brought in the likes of Ethan Pinnock, Charlie Goode, Ivan Toney, Shandon Baptiste and Tarique Fosu. Simply getting a foreign coach in with the shift towards domestic players might not yield the results people think it will.
I see that QPR fans now refer to Brentford as Spartak Hounslow. From the recent QPR fans rant about the ESL was this little jaunt about their local rivals: Justice League-leaders Spartak Hounslow who enjoyed another xG win against Millwall at the weekend, which the EFL is rather unfairly and arbitrarily insisting on recording as a 0-0. No matter, they’ll probably be the best team Cardiff have played all season when they meet tomorrow, with FiveThirtyEight.com making it 365% likely the Bees will come out on top. BM

Don’t think the point is a foreign manager guarantees success, rather why do our owners limit themselves to a much smaller pool of managerial/coaching talent.

The key word there is coach. All of those clubs use the director of football model. We still give our manager way too much power. But when we haven't people are critical of players maybe bought in without the manager picking his own players. Many of our fans are fairly backward thinking and live in the past.

Yes the nationality doesn’t matter.
But what does is that our owners don’t seem to entertain it.
They employ the same old British dinosaur with old school views.
That’s the issue.
A foreign manager wouldn’t guarantee anything and they’d probably employ one with similar shite values they love in the British managers.
You have to wonder though why they aren’t open to the sort of things a foreign manager generally would bring. And I don’t think it’s anything shady like racism why they don’t.
They’re just boring and safe.

It’s as likely to result in positive outcomes as negative one’s.

They’re just boring and safe. I think that's true. Peter identified with the Pulis type even in his first spell. Although the QSF thing must have come from somewhere (John?) But I think it would be harder to get a foreign manager now, work-permit wise. Farke, for example, wouldn't get one now (and neither probably would Solskjaer or Bielsa!) www.thestar.co.uk/sport/football/sheffield-united/the-big-challenge-sheffield-united-could-be-forced-to-overcome-if-they-plump-for-oostendes-alexander-blessin-3190336And one of the people very much in the mix at Sheff Utd probably wouldn't either. So it is a bit of a minefield post-Brexit. I'm struggling to come up with any names, so you'd be in wild punt territory in terms of finding one who'd be managing at a standard to get the permit, have the pedigree to justify it as a gamble - AND want to manage a cash-strapped Championship club

Probably as wild as they'd get, especially with him having dipped his toe into English football and done okay. It's a shame it didn't happen, given we laughably retreated to the scandalous appointment of Lambert.

It's a strange one with the board - by all reasonable accounts, Peter Coates was the one who backed Thordarson after the Walsall playoff defeat, and didn't support the decision to sack him after promotion. It seems like the combination of the Boskamp season and the success of Tony Pulis has really had a lasting impact on our managerial strategy.
I agree with other posters that have made the point that foreign managers do not equal success, nor am I wanting MON out, but we do seem to limit ourselves to those British and Irish managers that "know the league", or the odd "up and coming British manager" from lower down the pyramid (Cotterill at the time, Jones). Same seems to be happening with player transfers too, following some bad decisions on high profile signings from abroad (Imbula, Ndiaye, Etebo).

This sentiment of us switching to ‘foreign’ 😆 is all in aid to getting back to the promised land I guess. So up there, aside from the (self-made) top 6 there are 2 ‘foreign’ managers in place, Leeds & Wolves. In that money-bag top six there’s a ‘British’ caretaker at Spurs and Little Ole (who’s football/schooling was all here) who’s basically ‘British’ and Chelski have a try to Lamps who with more time could have done alright there. I think you'll find OGS is very much Norwegian and cut his managerial teeth at Molde who are...yep, Norwegian again. Even for an ignoramus like yourself that's a humdinger 😄
