The Wharf Tavern (Ind Coope), Wharf Street (replaced by the A500) and The Red Lion (Ind Coope), Church Street, Stoke, circa 1970, were both well attended pre-match pubs by friendly locals awaiting to welcome the visitors arriving on their football specials.

I remember going in there Sunday dinner covered in mud after running off hangovers playing nogger on Penkhull park and one of the owd flat caps at the bar looks at us and smiles and says ey up it's the fitbowers... Happy days

Bit off piste. Anyone been in the American on Waterloo road. Went past today and wondered what it’s like. Remember hearing it’s the only pub in the country with that name?

It was early eighties and I'd already moved away and it was one of my visits back home. I'd been the Marquis satdee night and Linus said about the game on penkhull park next morning. Them Penkhull park Sunday morning games had started after I moved. Mind you a lot of the lads there i didnt know, so you might have been there! Haha still happy days though! Those regular visits back home are some of my best memories!

The only rule with those Sunday games was getting to the Staff for opening at 12.00 noon. Remember pubs had to close at 2.00 on Sundays in those days ,unless you went around to the star in Liverpool Road😂😂

As for the Cobrdige one, wasn't that the game where the group started from one local ale house & as it progressed pas other such watering holes grew in number bit by bit. Pretty sure The Sentivale had a photo of the main road into Burslem just being flashing lights & a large mob on the march

The one in Normacot was called The America Hotel, not American. Its frontage was restored as part of the CORE training facility thing it's now part of:

The Star was a great little pub, another old style down to earth place. My favourite pub along that way was the Welly. And got a soft spot for the Commercial Inn cos it was my mum and dad's local and they always called it Ma's after the landlady, but when I was little I thought they meant 'Mars'
