I think it suits us better to play a 4 4 2 formation, but with Fox out is Thompson worth a go in this position? He is a good footballer, he is left footed and has decent pace as well. I really would have tried him out in this position now as a lot of our injured midfielders are returning. ....................Bursik................... Collins......Batth.........Souttar.....Thompson ...............Mikel.....Allen.............. Brown...................................Ince .............Powell...Fletcher................

He certainly has the air of Jack of all trades, master of none about him. We certainly can’t persist with 5 at the back. It’s a rubbish formation with no fluidity.

Oh yeah, imagine him trying defend the back post against a big striker? Jesus. Couldn't we just put somebody else there? Is it that different than a 6ft defender up against Souttar at 6ft 7" for one of our corners? Not saying it's the ideal solution but something has to change down our left side, urgently.

If you can play with Collins at rb - seemingly now abandoned - I don't see why we can't play with Chester at lb. He takes up lb positions some of the time and we don't really need him in central anyway.

www.transfermarkt.co.uk/jordan-thompson/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/321169Pretty sure he did play there as a youngster - but doesn't seem to have played a minute there in his senior career. Clucas has played there 27 times according to transfermarkt. You could make a case for either of those 2 giving it a go on Saturday (I wouldn't go with Tymon or McClean there in any situation) - but I can't really see how we can avoid bringing in a left-back as an urgent priority as soon as the window opens. We can't go on with Fox, and no proper alternative, which forces our hand to play the back 3

I hope Verlinden can challenge McClean in the role and although both have their shortcomings, both offer more to the squad and team than that insipid, invisible, apology of a footballer Ince!

That’s what finished me off last night. Strolling off pissing himself with there player after not even touching the ball when he came on. I’d have been embarrassed of my performance and ran down the tunnel.

Why can’t Collins play RB and Smith LB? I’m not sure the situation regarding Edwards but he can play left back. Most wingers these days are inverted and spend all game cutting inside so it wouldn’t be a problem. I’d certainly get him back if we can

How come we were playing Bruno at left back ,and it was acceptable.... Jesus,a carthorse if ever there was one, beaten for pace with a ball over the top every time, gave the ball away when he tried to come forward, and that was O'Neill's best option..and we can't find a better option now with the players we have got takes some believing !!!

Decent left foot, decent positional awareness. Not ideal, but l'm afraid l've lost all patience with Macca. I take the point about his possible vulnerability on the back post, but then, on that criterion, the best three left backs the country has produced over the past 30 odd years, Cole, Statham and Samson, wouldn't have had a look in.

Good point and even Stuart Pearce at 5'10" was no giant. Thompson or Clucas could act as stand in left back until either Fox or a new arrival is available.
