Holy Jesus Christ.... We are the only local radio station in the bbc namedā after a town/city, every other station is named after a county. Consider your self lucky you miserable bunch that your lumped in sharing equal airtime to Stafford rangers etc or - as the annoyance with Crewe, maybe we should be lumped in with radio Shropshire and get a good solid 3 mins after the Shrewsbury game? Not to rain on your parade because I agree with you but there are loads of BBC stations named after a city. Ange is there because sheās committed, consistent and... well doing it as opposed to winging on here like a spoilt little brat that isnāt eating their mash potato because it was to lumpy. You all think thereās any budget in local radio to āpayā for ex players? Get off your dreary miserable moaning thrones and maybe instead try putting that effort into something productive.... might actually get what you want. This is such a sorry dreary drivel of thread...,, Oh yeah, and as previously mentioned, please all record yourselves for a whole 90 minutes and letās see where we end up... š¤¦š»āāļø Not to rain on your parade as I agree with you but there are loads of BBC stations named after a city.

I think the most galling thing regarding Radio Stoke's coverage is that it could be so much better, even if there was no change in personnel. There's a real lack of imagination and (as someone above said) basic preparation for so much regarding the live commentaries. This has definitely been thrown into focus with the pairing of the local radio commentary and iFollow streams, but listening to our games on Radio Stoke has been maddening for a long time. Why Nigel Johnson is still operating as a commentator, calling the action for 50% of the game is beyond me - he couldn't keep up with play yesterday, despite most of the game unfolding at a snail's pace. The constant mangling of opposition names is one thing, but to consistently mistake the Stoke players he watches every week just personifies the amateurish, "it'll do" attitude that pervades the programming. Speaking as someone who's had to listen to most of our post-relegation midweek games, it would be far better to have him as a co-commentator, using his experience and knowledge for a bit of colour alongside a lead commentator whose focus would be solely on calling the action as it happens, so that what's actually going on in the game is clear to the radio audience. Ā Compare to the comms on Crewe and Vale games, which I tend to have on during my drive home if we're not playing that night, and the commentator/co-commentator dynamic seems much more thought out and better applied, to the benefit of the listener. Admittedly, I don't have the same emotional investment in the game, but I find it's much easier to follow what's actually happening in the match because someone focuses on actually telling you who has the ball and where, as opposed to stopping every 5 seconds to correct themselves. Regarding Angela's role - she seems to have been thrust into just being the general dogsbody for anything that needs doing, with no real thought to what she specifically could bring to the table. I'd much sooner have her as a consistent "fan's opinion" type pundit, but that's never going to happen when she has to deal with things like getting the line ups pre-game and has to have a working relationship with the coaching staff and club. The different skillset that Liam Lawrence brought to the table - experience as a professional, a bit of insight into tactics etc. was a breath of fresh air compared to the usual stodge of a bit of commentary and a load of description of what the keepers are wearing that day. I thought Leon Cort v Millwall was very good too. I appreciate that there's budgets to contend with and ex-pros have often have other commitments (plus the need to minimise interactions with a varying cast of pundits due to coronavirus) but to me Radio Stoke should have a stable of 2 or 3 ex-pros who could be called upon on a consistent basis to actually give the listener something worth tuning in for. I think there's so much complacency with regards to it being the only place to get full match commentary for every game, and thus having a captive audience, that there's no desire to actually think about how that matchday experience could be made better and actually make people want to listen to it. No-one's going to choose radio commentary over watching the game (live, streamed or on TV) but the reluctance or inability of Radio Stoke's match coverage to carve out a niche for itself regarding insight and analysis is such a missed opportunity, especially given the reduced national media clubs get outside the Premier League. Canāt disagree but hate the knocking of Nige. He is part of the furniture and like favourite old dog. There is something comforting and familiar about radio stokes coverage, Iām probably not alone but I was an expat for a while and it listening to radio Stoke while abroad before and after games was really a link to home and the match. Sadly it probably does need to be updated and refreshed, and yes no more Lawrence has left a hole, maybe super jon could help out! On Sunday they used have a show where a couple of supporters were invited to talk about the game, sometimes they'd have a player on the panel, all was calm and it was always interesting.

You're an awful Stoke fan but you go all pissy when it's mentioned. Because itās nonsense Mr Pwingy. I expect a bit better and for the last 5 years have been way more on the ball about the bigger picture than most. Everything I say is done with the hope it makes us better. šš See. Just too easy.

Absolutely - not sure there's many people in TV or radio who've done as much commentary as he has, especially not for one team! But I think if Radio Stoke were serious about making the live coverage as good as it could be, he wouldn't be trying to give the details of exactly what is happening on the pitch. I'd have someone else calling it, and then get Nigel as the co-commentator, where he would be free to give it all his flourishes and trademark sayings without it getting in the way of letting the listener know what's actually happening.

It has to be the worst Radio phone in show ever, the pundits are shocking, no-one asks any pertinent questions when they have the chance. It is good for comedy value lately though and our gorgeous Ange is the only shining light Gouranga. Youāre a big man arenāt you? And very funny. What does it say about a man though if he takes pleasure in bullying a woman. And not bullying in person, but bullying from behind his keyboard. Your attempt at irony isn't lost on me Gouranga.

I've got no issue with the commentary from Radio Stoke. These are local people doing their best to provide match commentary in a world full of sport in which we're bombarded with commentaries 24/7. Nigel Johnson gets a players name wrong and gets pages of people slating him. Keep going Nige, your part of the match day experience.

Is Nige still banging away? Bloody hell, I turned the radio on with about three minutes to go, just before the incident with McClean. WTF was Nige getting through him? Just kept repeating that they were banging away and banging each other. I've always liked his commentaries, but I actually started to get a tad concerned about him with the number of times he kept repeating that they were banging away. Very strange.

Not strictly a footballing matter, but our Nigel, bless him, talked about "mist drifting in off the Cheviots" instead of the Chilterns in his match commentary, As an ex Geography teacher I am a bit picky about these things.

I think he should finish at the end of the season. I don't know whether he gets easily confused or his eyesight has gone really downhill. He was confusing Cousins with Clucas, Brown and Vokes just 2 examples. Oh as well as reading "Welcome till I die" when it is obviously said Wycombe š¤¦āāļø. I really enjoy the 'wireless' commentary from Radio Stoke. Its many years since we needed a Licence to listen to a radio, so its all free bar either electricity or a battery for the radio. I recall before mass media and Radio Stoke, waiting in anticipation on the Boothen End during reserve games for half-time and full time scores (which were very basic), then dashing to get the Sentinel football final at around 18:00. I was also up the Gulf at Kharg Island in '72 with no way of getting commentary on the League Cup Final, and just a snippet of the situation at half-time from a crackly BBC World Service, and then waiting for full time reports from old Div 1 games, before it was mentioned Stoke had beaten Chelsea! I'm sure there are many older Stokies, brought up with the radio, who do as I do - listen to the commentary in the dark, imagining the ground, any crowd, and interpreting the commentary - whether its Nige being a bit flowery, and getting excited with anticipation as our attack builds up, or concerned as the opposition bear down on our goal. I also appreciate that after an away night match, BBC Radio Stoke is there to get any post match comment from Management, before packing up their equipment and a long drive back home. BZ to them.
