So he’s waisted his career? Jon Parkin or Jan Molby, maybe, but not Shaq.

No doubt he has the skill but at Stoke I think he did not show it often enough, although he showed the effort desire and application necessary in the modern game on even fewer occasions. Interestingly Liverpool tried to off load him in this transfer window, refusing a loan deal only interested in a permanent transfer but no one made an offer according to the club. The lack of an offer for me says more about his standing and current worth than our combined personal opinions.

Can we stop this trend of having one thread per player regardless of what the news is?
A “Shaqiri’s had a hair transplant” thread is now a “Shaqiri has COVID” thread FFS!

I'm gutted that we have regressed on such a scale. Devastated even. Get well Shaq either way.

I wonder if he fancies a loan for the season at Stoke - with, of course, Liverpool paying 3/4 of his wages! Makes sense surely?

Interestingly Liverpool tried to off load him in this transfer window, refusing a loan deal only interested in a permanent transfer but no one made an offer according to the club. The lack of an offer for me says more about his standing and current worth than our combined personal opinions. What twaddle. Shaq was a luxury player of that there is no doubt. We knew that when we signed him and so did Liverpool - I think they signed him knowing full well that the fee was cheap and they had a top-end substitute on their bench. For us he never showed a lack of effort or skill, but games could often pass him by as we could not afford to play to his strengths - often expecting him to play a wide role with defensive responsibilities that are just not part of his game. If we (or any other team) could afford to play him like he does for Switzerland we would have really seen him shine. Despite that he was excellent for us and left me with many fond memories. Its all about opinions and not everyone will agree but its fine - some will continue to believe that Arnie was lazy, Shaq did not care, Bojan had no bottle, but they are only denying themselves some of the pleasures of the best era for SCFC in decades.

I cant believe that Shaqiri cant find a club somewhere across Europe. Hes still only 28
Liverpool probably asking for 50M fee I suppose.
His career his disappearing fast. Surely he's still good enough for a Champions League club?

Surely he's still good enough for a Champions League club? He could easily find a club. He wouldn't easily be able to find a club who'd match the wages he currently on though.

He's had a career at Liverpool. Played 7 times in a winning Champions League campaign. Played 7 times in a winning League campaign. 41 games, 7 goals over the 2 seasons. English Champion European Champion World Champion Started 2 and came on as sub 5 times in the Premier League, in total he’s played 182 minutes of football. He’s lucky to be getting a winners medal to be fair.... A few years back he wouldn’t have got a Premier League medal... “Since the 2012–13 season, a player needs to have played in a minimum of five matches for a title-winning team to qualify for a medal. This is down from the previous standard of ten matches played”. I’m sort of disappointed with him. I’ve a memory of seeing him playing against Man U as a youngster and looking awesome. I had to pinch myself when he came to Stoke. A world class talent. Something he has shown from time to time. But not enough. I want to see him out on the pitch doing stuff. Very disappointing way to see such talent wasted.

I think Shaqiri, like Ozil and others to be fair, have just suffered from the way in which football has changed. He's a player well suited to the 4-2-3-1 formations you used to see everywhere at the top end of Europe pre 2010. There's quite a few players who had they been around 10 years earlier would've been held in much higher regard.
It happened to managers too, Wenger seemed to struggle around that time as football begun to move on and never really got to grips with the more effective, newer systems. Then a few years later when it changed again we saw it up close and personal with Hughes where he too couldn't figure out a way to adapt.

great to see our history erased from him in this post. Games played: 92 Basel, 84 Stoke, 52 Munich, 45 Liverpool and 15 Inter. Probably because he only played for us when it suited him to do so and even then he'd often do his "bit" then not bother for rest of game.
