My favourite player of all time John (Josh) Mahoney played just a little part in that game! It was rumoured at the time and I think true that Huddy, Geoff Salmons and Hursty would turn out (Heavily hungover) for the Hunters Lodge on a Sunday in one of the local leagues! ... How things change!

Funny how the mind plays tricks I was sure there was something about them having a new kit that day , but must have been another time . That was a new Leeds kit, with blue and white piping on the sleeves and shorts. They played in a completely plain yellow kit the season before. Thanks Dave I just had a vague memory of Clough saying it might as well go in the bin after that .

Was that Hugh Johns commentating? My favourite ever, better than Motson, Davies and a trillion miles better than the crap we have to endure these days with the the likes of Tyldesly. This was the time I first recall football sticker albums and the strips. Fond memories. Huge Ones?

He has a Grandson called Tommy who currently plays at Man City, must be late teens now. Hugh Johns was way ahead of his time there. Mike Doyle was as cool a player as you'd see but apparently a bit of a loose cannon off the pitch. I know that Mike Doyle fought with alcoholism and died of liver failure at the age of 64. He seemed like a very steady character on the pitch. He was one of Alan Durban's defensive rocks in our promotion year. Played 115 times for us, quite a lot really, considering he was considered as past his best when he came here at the age of 32. So perhaps qualifies as an unsung hero too! Mike Doyle was an alcoholic off the pitch but so were Alan Hudson and George best He was fantastic on the pitch , cool and brave .To be honest a man city hero more than a stoke one .But an absolutely fantastic footballer for man city and Stoke . Dennis Smith in the tackle , Bobby Moore with the ball at his feet . Young players , senior players , fans ... everyone looked up to him .He just exuded authority and made the right decision 99 per cent of the time , giving the illusion that defending was easy .

Just watched that Leeds game video - I was there at the game and just noticed it was on 18th August which is my birthday - it was a great birthday present for me with us beating Dirty Leeds so comfortably. Hudson, Greenhoff, Ritchie, etc etc - we had some great players !
Great memories !

I suppose there were probably quite a few who could be described as alcoholics.

Did Leeds used to bring big numbers in this era? Obviously now they have a fantastic away support and sell out wherever they go.

Amazing how many locals there were in that side. Farmer, Marsh, Pejic, Smith,Dodd, Haselgrave. Whats happened to local football. Every time a local comes near the first team he gets slaughtered in the Oatcake or in the stands

You can see why Leeds hated playing us. They had a good team but we played them off the park. Such a crime that team was broken

Remember a late equaliser from Doyle at Palace in the old first division. Good mental.

He also had the habit of calling the players by their nicknames. In the Star Soccer footage of Leicester v Stoke in 78/79, I was wondering why the fuck he was calling Mike Doyle ‘Tommy’ 🤣 He has a Grandson called Tommy who currently plays at Man City, must be late teens now. Hugh Johns was way ahead of his time there. Mike Doyle was as cool a player as you'd see but apparently a bit of a loose cannon off the pitch. He’s very highly thought of too. Could be a good loan option for us if he can’t break on to their bench next season.

Their centre back nodded a back pass to the keeper but put the ball past past him and Doyle had a tap in.

I saw all but 1 of the home games that season, and about 10 of the away games, and it was a joy to watch Stoke anticipating a victory, or a decent performance most games we played. I recall we always felt just 1 player, max 2, away from a league title. Geoff Salmons settled in really and was a solid addition to the squad but we lost John Ritchie to injury and Jimmy missed a few games with a broken nose. The lack of quality on the subs bench was a real issue. Sean Haslegrave was a great lad and gave 100% but not quite up to the top standard. Ian Moores had some great games, but also missed a lot of chances.
We were soooo close that year! still around the top at Easter, and only slipped in the last 3/4 games. Still, I watched some fantastic games. You just didn’t beat Leeds 3-0 in those days, and we regularly put 3 or 4 goals past the opposition. Those were the days.

Remember this game so well. I was sat on the wall on the Butler Street Paddock and my abiding memory is Cloughie approaching the Boothen End and being bombarded with Toilet Rolls

If that was true none or only a few of the names fca listed would have made it. Can distinctly remember Bracewell getting the bird and wondering why. Bould got slaughtered (he was appalling at fullback mind).. could go on. Shotton more recently Just believe local youth products get more grief

Yes Hugh Johns with his signature ‘One Nuffin!’ Catchphrase. "We wanted that third goal, and we got it"! I found Hugh John's commentary poetical. I remember his 'There it is!" for the goals. He was a wonderful commentator, my favourite ever, and he used to love Stoke in that period, he was very eloquent admirer of skilful football. Loved Greenhoff and Huddy. He always pronounced pejic as peycheck for some reason!!
