Very sad. First saw him play against us as a centre forward for Sunderland in a League Cup match in 1972. As mentioned above he became a totally dominant centre half who was one of the best headers of a ball I have ever seen and was a colossus in the year or so he played for us. I don't ever remember him missing a header,he was probably the most dominant centre half in the air that I have ever seen.He could punch the ball harder and further than some could kick it and his timming was perfect.Hardly surprising he has suffered brain damage as a result.

A monster of a centre back who was an excellent reader of the game, dominant in the air, a great tackler and good on the ball. We were very lucky to drop on a player of International standard who wouldn't have been out of place in any team in the country. It was a privilege and an education to watch him play for us.

RIP 'Big' Dave Watson - one of my boyhood heroes... He isn't dead mate I'm genuinely sorry to anyone upset by my failure to read the article properly. I think I was guilty of reading the comments first and wrongly assuming he had passed away. Again, my apologies...

Awful news - Penny sounds brilliant though, and others around him. It's stating the obvious I know but this always seems to be the players we loved because they never shirked a challenge xxx

Oh for a defender of Dave Watson's quality out there today.
He was a great player and it's so sad to hear of his illness.

Very, very sad news. He was a true giant of a player. And THAT goal against Southampton The ball would still be in orbit if it hadn't been for the net. All the best, Dave! Id forgotten quirky stand behind the goal. Reminded me of the vetch in swansea. Those old grounds had great character not like these soulless stadia now.

Sunderland supporters have always impressed me. Like our own they’ve had to put up with a lot of ups and downs but always stick by their club and ex players.

I remember him playing against us (can’t remember who for) and in particular against Big Bren.
He let Big Bren win the ball 3/4 times (a backward header) and then stood off him by 5 yards. Big Bren carried on flicking on a header directly to Watson standing off him. Class wise defender!!

Love this. Dave Watson was a great player. I don't say that lightly. I didn't realise how good he was until I started to go to live England games. Ive seen him player against Argentina, Italy, West Germany and was top class Best England defender of that era and was still bloody good for us even though he was 36 when he signed for us. Nice guy too.

It’s a terrible and demoralising illness for both sufferers and those around them. Only hope it’s an area where science can start to make significant progress as soon as possible. Dave was an example of what being a professional footballer should be about - never letting his standards drop and leading from the front. We had a few in that era - Doyle and Kendall being great examples. They could have easily taken their foot off the gas with the glory days of their careers behind them but they came here and were outstanding. Best wishes to him and his family.
