Just back from watching 1917.
An astonishing film - as good a piece of cinematography as I’ve ever seen. Breathtaking.
If you’re looking for something special, check it out.

Yep, saw it yesterday too. Blown away by the whole experience. Tense, nervy, gloriously brutal and as you say, the cinematography was out of this world. It should be mandatory to go and see this on the big screen.

Saw yesterday and agree with comments. Excellently filmed and acted with gripping plot. My wife winced at the no mans land scene with the rotting corpse.
Only. slight quibble was waterfall scene . The topography of Northern France did not fit the incident bu realise I am being very picky there.

It was enjoyable but is a cross between a 1st World War version of Saving Private Ryan and The Revenant. Wouldn't exactly describe the plot as gripping - will he/won't he make it in time is the complete extent of the plot with the only real 'twist' in it being the scene with the aeroplane... I got a bit fed up of his charmed life and indestructibility if I'm honest and, like Bilic, flat landscapes in Northern France don't have rivers with rapids and waterfalls! Being picky I know! But not bad and 7/10 overall. Bit over-hyped to be honest.

Just back from seeing it - a captivating film with outstanding cinematography. It was apparently based on tales his grandfather had told about his own experiences in the war.
As many films before have done it really shows the horror and futility of war but this somehow seems to make it even more graphic due to the excellent camera work. I agree with the above comments about the waterfall/rapids scene and his somewhat "charmed life".
I didn't think I would "enjoy" it (in the same way I would enjoy other "entertaining" films) due to the subject material but overall I would thoroughly recommend this film.
If you haven't seen it yet don't miss out.

Hoping to see it but the Mrs. won't go, will have to go and sit on my own, which seems a bit weird.

The opening scene where it goes from tranquil to in to the middle of war is beautifully shot.

Handsomely made but a teensy bit overrated. Worth watching once but not sure you’d go back to it.

Watched it last night, a good film with excellent cinematography. However, I understand what others were saying about the lead actor leading this charmed life. Typical I'm afraid of what Hollywood and other filmaker's do, think of James Bond, Rambo, the Taken films; the lead only has to glance at a "baddie" and they are rolling over dead. Where as bullets, bombs and falling buildings just seem to deflect off their body. 7/10 for me, Saving Private Ryan is a better film.

Saving Private Ryan is a better film. Well if that's the metric you're going by, there aren't too many better!

The single shot makes it feel a bit like a computer game at times, but it also makes it incredibly tense. Very good film.

Agreed,
We saw it last night and it’s definitely one to see at the cinema rather than wait till it’s available on telly. It’s an average story, but shot extraordinarily well.
As said above, would you go back and see it a second time? – probably not. But would you stop someone who hasn’t seen it going? – probably not.

Nigel seems to take the same view as most on here on 1917
Hesitated to post for obvious reasons but he does give an interesting perspective ( in my opinion).
From 27 onwards he gives a couple of anecdotes that some might find mildly interesting.
