Don't believe everything you're told, whoever told you that is wrong. Gouranga. The more people come out with this kind of piffle, the more they obviously believe it. For all their faults, does anybody truly believe that those upstairs were responsible for signing Saido Berahino? It's laughable. Or Imbula.

Granted it’s unlikely Hughes had no say, however it’s also plausible the board would sign Berahino, and obviously sanction these things, they don’t exactly have a glowing portfolio of signings in recent times.

Vs Man City: 2-0 up after 15 minutes. Vs Man Utd: 2-0 up after 26 minutes. How good does Walters look in that video! I don't think Walters ever got the praise he deserved. Even when he got praise there was a "but." He was criticised for his goalscoring record yet played most of his games for us on the wing, often in a defensive role. He was more skilful than he was given credit for too. I was also a big fan of Afellay. I don't get all the hate he got and gets. Fingers crossed O'Neill can turn us back into a hard-working team with 2 or 3 exciting players. The toughest part will be getting out of the Championship. If we get promoted under O'Neill, I can see us being a top-half (Premier League) club again.

It was the back half of that season that we started to go backwards under Hughes, having been excellent in the first half. But nothing we shouldn't have been able to easily sort out if we'd just woken up a bit. It was the 2-2 at home to Leicester when we were 2 up Vardy sent off and all 4 defenders on yellow cards and all at HT December 2016 was the date it all started to turn sour Bojan had a really good game, first for a while, then wasn't seen again till Wolves FA Cup debacle where everyone was shit first half but he and Imbula were singled out by Hughes.

They sanction signings because they put their trust in the manager they appoint. As soon as that trust goes, then they have no choice but to sack the manager.

Personally I always thought Walters brought a bit of balance to the flair and it gets forgotten how good he was that game Bojan ripped Arsenal to pieces. First time I saw Afellay thought he was shit, fell over and did nowt on the wing. Then when he played in the middle he was an absolute Rolls Royce of a player - remember one game on Sky where his pass completion came up halfway through the second half at over 90%! Fuck me we had some players!!

not one of these players is left. How far we have fallen in such as a short period of time. [br I can’t believe some of those players played for us. I think I took them for granted when they were here. They were great times. Hope we can get those times back.

Even that seems like slightly damning praise - he had skill himself (maybe I'm reading too much into it). But of course he didn't have the flair of Bojan, Arnie etc.

The funny thing about that video is that even though it shows two of our very best wins and football a million light years away from what we're currently watching, it actually shows a team in decline.
That summer we lost N'Zonzi, who went on to win the World Cup, and replaced him with a succession of players who are not on the same planet. We made the costly signing of Imbula. Bojan scores the first goal in those clips, but we were witnessing his swansong (for goodness knows what reason). We lost the superb Victor Moses, who went on to win the league, and replaced him with Xherdan Shaqiri, who had his moments but is very much a Premier League version of Tom Ince. Ryan was the best performing centre back in the entire league, but then bust his back in January. We were six points off fourth place after we beat Everton, but fifteen points after we collapsed in the second half of the season. We lost three games 3-0 in a row.
If you wanted to pinpoint the moment that it all went wrong, you could probably find it in that season.

The ability on the field had easily overtaken the abilities of Hughes and co and I have always said it was a missed opportunity to attract a manager who could manage the type of players we had. Unfortunately it had to be a foreign manager in the Klopp style but we never looked in that direction and were quite happy to stick with what we had through sheer unambitious mentality. The sleep walk certainly started that season.

We were indeed once very good. Not that anyone appreciated it. There seemed to be much gnashing of teeth about tbe next level.
