I liked all sorts , to me the6 were always just guitar bands whether you called them metal, punk, indie, goth etc. Saw the Smiths, New Order, Maiden , Status Quo and the Damned in the same 2-3 month period in 86 and remember school friends ripping the piss but truly was all just music to me.
Remember a kid at school telling me Doug E Fresh will still be around in 30 years and Iron Maiden won’t lol. Fair point on the genre if not the artist!

Following on from Lord's Simple Minds post, this masterpiece still sounds as good as it did back then....

Following on from Lord's Simple Minds post, this masterpiece still sounds as good as it did back then.... They were a killer live band, my older brother used to go watch them at Hammersmith on the New Gold Deeam and Sparkle tours before they went to arenas. A very happy memory , we went to see them at Milton Keynes Bowl in June 86 just after O levels finished (with the delightful Cassie from Sutton, but I’ll say no more on that ) on a blazing hot summer day, a brilliant lineup of Waterboys, The Bangles and the Cult topped off by SM. We were all together when a Waterfront started and the place started bouncing and all of a sudden you’re 50feet or more away from your mates lol. To show the kind of stuff I was also into, we were back at teh Bowl a week or two later for Marillion, and that summer also saw Queen 3 times (Wembley with Quo, The Alarm and InXs, Cologne with Marillion and Level 42, and Kenbworth with Quo and Big Country) as well as The Damneds ridiculously good 10th anniversary shows in a meltingly hot tent in Finsbury Park. That was a hell of a summer well O level results not permitting lol I did pass the retakes though

I was only 15 when that album was released but I loved it and played it repeatedly until I knew every word to every song

It was wettest midsummers day for years in 85, we had dilemma that day as Deep Purple were at knebworth and as we’d seen U2 late 84 opted for the Purple gig. Coach got stuck in mud and didn’t get out the field til about 4am lol

Did I hear someone mention spear of Destiny, interview before this is quite interesting. Kirk had quite the chequered history , Theatre of Hate left me a bit cold but I think is where Billy Duffy got his break , and I’m sure Kirk was mentioned as a conquest in Boy George’s book ( don’t get me wrong, Culture Club had some great songs but keep your sex life and partners private mate) , and then Spear shone very brightly for a few years. He still tours them now. We saw them on an autumn night in 85 at one of my favourite venues the Hammersmith Palais, a beautiful ballroom with bags of character now revamped as high end student flats. They were brilliant , had a song on the album they were touring called Micky, absolute belter. Saw Lords Of the New Church at the Palais too with the late great Stiv Bators and Brian James of the Damned . loving this thread!

I was pretty obsessed with U2 at the time so they won the day. Bumped into some purple fans at the services on the way back and exchanged stories. Great days.

Just for fun, as just heard this on an advert, identify this 1981 cracker from this line in the chorus :
“Oo oo, oo oo, oo oo, oo oo, oo -ee -oo....”
And you’ll have to sing it out loud to work it out probably lol
