A tragic story I was completely unaware of: The Hogmanay cinema panic that killed 71 childrenA false alarm for a fire saw children trying to make their way en masse to the fire escapes. Unfortunately, the doors were padlocked on the outside. To make matters worse, the doors opened inwards. One outcome of this tragedy was escape doors were to be fitted with push bars that opened outwards - as we see at cinemas and all other public ventures today.

That's terrible - and yet it is seemingly little known about. It must have been horrific.
At least something good did come out of it with the introduction of the escape doors and push bars.
