I used to love the wine bar at the bottom end of Merrial Street in Newcastle where the gentlemen's club is now, previously the Compasses. Decent food and service and a good crowd in there back in the day. It all ended when the proprietors cleared off to open a burger bar/cafe up at Shelton. On the subject of wine bars Candles used to heave back in the day.

My two favourite pubs when I was knocking about Hanley were Flickers and Leadbelly's, worked at Flickers sometimes when I was on leave.
Biggest loss for me tho was the Sea Lion in Stoke, I'm glad there's a pub in its place but the craic is never going to be the same.

Shamrock and Robin Hood in Longton were my locals and both long gone - my pub going days have dwindled down to a few times a year since

That pub was built to last forever. Can’t believe it’s gone. Took MrsBath there on way back from footie, in our early days. Played bar skittles & drank Bass.

Used to go there early 80s. You could set your watch by the fight that would always break out at 10:30 every Friday night. Also used to frequent Heaths Wine Bar and the wonderfully industrial looking Leadbellys.

Yes, that's the one, I think it was called The Angel Hotel before it was the Candle, I've seen some old photo's, might have been called something in between too. Then I think it was Flares later, a mate used to manage it in the 80s, used to do well out of the lunchtime food trade, the brewery let him keep what he made on that side of the business. I'd love to have a wander about down there nowadays, probably used for storage, hope it isn't filled in.

Quite a few of our haunts from that era that've gone: Leadbelly's;Heath's;Evergreens in Cobridge etc.

That tiny bacon butty shop on North Road, Cobridge. Always packed, fat sandwiches, saucy wenches behind the counter (that's red or brown sauce)

The Crossways at the bottom of the Ironmarket became a gentlemens club for a time which has now closed down. Was there really also a 'Compasses' at the bottom end of Merrial Street which became and remains a gentlemens club? Too much of a coincidence we must be talking of the same place?

I think it was the Compasses then the Crossways however there was a self contained small bar with an entrance onto Merrial Street just down from the pull in and for a fair few years this operated as a wine bar. www.closedpubs.co.uk/staffordshire/newcastleunderlyme_compasses.htmlwww.closedpubs.co.uk/staffordshire/newcastleunderlyme_crossways.html

That's some good investigative work, you are quite correct. You briefly got my hopes up that there was lapdancing back in Newcastle but for sure that closed down at these premises I would say 3 years ago.
