Proper with you on that Murph, Danish are to die for !! Looking forward to Xmas very much, but the post-Xmas diet is calling already I can't believe I'm going to admit this, Tel, but last week Mr Surf was going out to get some new gloves & I asked him to call in somewhere & get some Danish pastries - this is after my managing to resist getting any for about 2 years, despite the permanent longing..... he brought a box of 6 in and it's just as well they were quite small as I ate 5 of them in about 10 minutes before my conscience told me to stick the brakes on...... Don't tell anybody else, though, please, Tel, because you know what they're like on 'ere --- they never let you forget anything! Should’ve had the lot Murph and told the old man you had mice in. He would’ve spent the rest of the weekend setting traps while you wiped the crumbs from your guilty lips. 😁

Hey hey... I know Murph... I tried a few types of chicken coating, but it didn't last long I lapsed.. Sesame seeds and cashews are about the limit nutty/seed wise re savoury meals. My pastrami ponderings is/was part of my Fray Bentos Steak & Kidney pie withdrawl plan. Inadvertantly crept up to a three pies a week scenerio. Slipping the odd inbetween meal pie in too... Had to get a grip.. mix things up a bit more... I like it with a creamy gratin dauphinois potato nothing else 👍 What do you like with dauphinois, peanut butter, fray bentos, pastrami... What, what, what?

Philistine... it's like thin kebab meat serve that up on a dinner I'd be hung.. And whaaat about gravy... no mate. Wrong... Chunky red - yes. You’re a tough customer lol, ok go a bit poncey and go almost posh party food and make mini Yorkshire’s with pastrami ticked inside, thick gravy/red wine sauce to dollop on top and some chantennay carrots and small roasties. And mustard and red wine . Lol you know it makes sense Well mate I'm big enough to admit I was too quick to poo poo your 'dinner' suggestion. In a strange quirk of fate I had a delivery of brussels on a stalk, carrots etc... \\\\\\thought dinner was the destiny... So I whipped up a red wine gravy et pastrami and it were rather lush. Dunner knock it til you've tried it etc... {with the exception of anything beginning with H.} Chin chin....

I like it with a creamy gratin dauphinois potato and always eat it wearing nothing other than my pinny, dangly earrings and stilettos. 👍 Glad your radar picked this one up, H --- it's saved me the trouble of having to do the usual S-O-S "We really need 'Arry on this" post. All right, then, I say all right, then, what about something similar…….. the Swedish dish, Jansson’s Temptation. Apparently the correct version is made not with anchovies, as we usually tend to do it over here, but with pickled sprats, which in Swedish are called '‘Ansjovis’, and which might be how the confusion arose - plus the fact that we hardly ever see tins of pickled sprats over here although Ocado sell them. I always make it with anchovies, though, because they're so deeelish. Any other fans?! (PS: Yeah, I know he was good in 'The Fugitive', before yer start!)

We are pretty lucky that any mice round here seem able to sense that the resident cat and dog are in charge of which 4-legged varieties get to visit!

I'm wondering how my dear pals in Gaithersburg are doing!

Axolotyls are intriguing if not especially dynamic pets... They do a lot of skulking out of sight. It is impressive watching an explosive burst for a grub etc. Dead food illicits little response.. it's generally only when a fish shakes the food that the 'lotls spark into action. They'll sit with a piece of ham or whatever on their heads. It's their rejuvinatory capabilities that's fascinating.. They can be a bit destructive digging in the substrate and such..

Thank you Cheese, good stuff. More in keeping with the origin of the thread, Mrs Md hunted down a pork wrapped pancetta that will be the guest artist at Christmas. Calvados apple sauce perhaps?

I have nowt to say on Pastrami, seeing as I don't like the taste of beef (I know, Phillistine etc. My mum was a superhero in so many ways and I loved her to bits. But a good cook she warn't and 18 years of her Sunday roast beef did it for beef forever for me).
However, good to see you back in circulation Cheeees.
Axl Otl & his mate still doing fine then?
I did umm and arr over getting one for a long, long time. They're utterly fascinating. In the end I went for a much cheaper and more available option. Dumbo *** the Betta (Vietnamese Fighting Fish). He's totally placid with all other species, completely ignores them. Spends much of his time either sitting on top of the skull ornament or lying on top of a plant. Lazy bugger. But he'll come straight to me if I walk close to the tank and swim in & out of my fingers when I put my hand in the tank whilst cleaning it. He'll do a figure-of-eight "hungry dance" to tell me it's time for tea. Proper little character.
*** Dumbo because he's an elephant-eared betta. This pic is very close to his colouration

They can be a lot of fun. They also definitely have their own character.

Don't be ridiculous, JD, he looks like a proper poncey little git and one who's wearing a big frilly petticoat to boot. ('Mmmm……nice…..') Dumbo? You should call him Petunia, because he also looks like one of those. So a Flower Fish - or Fairy Fish! - would be a FAR better name. This link below has a section called 'How to Teach Your Betta Fish Tricks' which says, amongst other things, that 'with patience and a little persistence, you can teach him to play soccer.' I tell you what - if you can train yours to get a minimum of 30 a season in the back of the net for us I'll go on News at Ten and apologise for calling him a poncey little git. www.aqueon.com/articles/how-can-i-play-with-my-betta-fish

In my experience axolotls mix ok with fish. They showed interest in the smallest weather loach, had it down it's throat at one point.. The axolotyls do their own thang. Not seen if more agressive perch like species of fish would attack the axls though... I'm drawn to terrapins at the mo...

Terrapins - smashing little things. Used to be one in a disused quarry I used to fish, presumably dumped by an uncaring ex-owner. He thrived there, though, and was especially partial to my secret killer bait I used to winkle out the fussy tench & carp in there (tinned macaroni cheese). Worked brilliantly on my target species, but equally well on Terry the terrapin who I had to lure away from my intended fishing area with a trail of lobbed bits of macaroni.
Yes, Murph, Dumbo has taken to learning tricks very readily. A proper little character. He has a neutral-bouyancy ball the he likes to dibble into the skull ornament & then nose out of the eye-sockets. Caused quite a stir for Mrs Q the first time she saw it pop out of an eye socket as she didn't know I'd put the ball in the tank.
He's so great, I bought Mrs Q a second betta for Xmas - housed in a different tank of course. He's largely blue in colour so he's been christened Frankie Boyle.
