Looks like this is a big issue with him.
O’Neill will be without defender Ryan Shawcross on Saturday. The one-time England international was on the road to recovery from a long-term ankle injury sustained in pre-season, only for his recovery time to be extended after injuring his back whilst in action for Stoke’s under-23s last week.
I just don't see him coming back from these injuries.

O'Neill has stated that Nathan Collins has a back injury. Ryan just isn't ready yet.

After a long lay off, muscle injuries are very common. Nothing to see here.

Just worries me it's his back again, just keeps cropping up all the time. hopefully just a niggle due to time out.

From personal experience I'd say it's pretty normal that anyone with a back problem will stiffen up if they are laid low for a period of time with another injury. It sounds like the club are being sensible about how they manage it, which can only benefit the player.
