BBC says he died with his wife by his side, so his death wasn't self-inflicted. Maybe he had some sort of illness the public didn't know about.
Either way, very sad news. He was one of the earliest chefs I can remember who put the fun into cooking.
That hair will go down in culinary legend.

That’s really sad news RIP indeed. Got his “New British Classic “ book about 2005/6 ish and it’s been my most used cookbook ever since. No age at all to go.
