Hi all.
Not a doctor so please take this information as it is. No more or less.
Got out of hospital the Sunday night of the international break weekend. Sent home with a slew of tablets, naturally. Wednesday evening started to feel like a had a very high ankle sprain left leg. As I was recouperating from the hospital visit I wasn’t doing much. Play Station, Telly, reading.
Thursday morning a little worse, got off the sofa, went to the kitchen, heard a snap like a pistol going off and I am on my back in agony staring at the ceiling. Wife out of town and couldn’t drive, right leg starts to feel same as left.
ER yesterday, described it to the Doc and before she has even looked at it asks if have taken Levaquin. Why yes, Mon, Tue, Wed last week. So, well know side effects (apparently to Doctors, not us) is tendon problems. Left leg tendon is snapped off the bone and I am lucky so far the right is not as bad, yet. Massive boot on the left leg, crutches......oh and it can take a year to heal.
ER doc says levaquin is one of THE nastiest drugs out there and she would never prescribe it to anyone. For anything.
My apologies if this is well know or has been touched on before. If this helps one person it’s worth it though.

Ouch... nasty injury. Mate of mine did his whilst playing rounders at a family day. Smashed the ball and dropped the bat to set out on his run when he felt a massive thud on his calf and a loud snap.. he thought someone had thrown the bat at him before realising what had happened. He then collapsed to the floor squealing like a stuffed pig. Surgery and leg cast followed... 6 months before he could run.
Out of interest, what was this drug prescribed for if it has such a potentially damaging side effect. I understand if you can't say on a public forum.

Nasty stuff that, it's one of the drugs prescribed if you inhale Anthrax. Given how the US medical system works, have you ruled out the doctor prescribing it in order to a.) guarantee you being a repeat customer and b.) so they can prescribe you some opioids for pain relief and earn the money they get from big pharma?

Horrific stats from a couple of years ago had it that an American died from prescription opioid overdose on average every 20 minutes, 70 odd a day, I can't see why it would have changed dramatically. Probably be the UK next.

Just got off the opioids cold turkey after four or so years. Got the golf clap off the local docs for that. This was prescribed out of the hospital release so I don’t think they want the repeat business.

It’s a powerful antibiotic. That powerful it can snap tendons? I'm familiar with your described side effect from Lovofloxacin. It was mentioned inside the package of my antibiotics Ciprofloxacin here as well. I got antibiotics called Ciprofloxacin in February because of epididymitis (bi testicle inflammation). It's a so called broad spectrum antibiotics. Beware of those! My heart felt it was about to almost explode, with its increased pulse and blood pressure. And apart from deadly heart attacks mentioned in their list of possible side effects, cases of schizophrenia, chronic psychose, deafness, polyneuropathy and liver cancer are also mentioned for instance. Longest list I've ever seen, around 1 meter totally, including the backside. Still suffering from side effects. Neuropathy and ear pain. It was "too effective". When there's no bacteria left it invades the tissues and myeline itself. "The Swedish System" though is idiotic. As soon as you have read the possible side effects (which are never ever mentioned by any doctor, nurse or pharmacist) inside the package, the responsibility is practically all yours! During the summer I got a second opinion from another doctor who went through the journal and tests, and she thought it wasn't a bacterial inflammation to begin with, but caused by a trauma. And I shouldn't have been given that shit in the first place!

I was prescribed Ciprofloxacin a few years ago and learned first hand about it’s side effects. First thing I noticed after a couple of days was severe bruising down the inside of my right forearm. A few days after this I woke up with excruciating pain in my right Achilles’ tendon. I couldn’t stand up. I remember having to crawl to the bathroom. A quick read of the bit of paper in the box of pills told me the culprit was the antibiotic I’d been given. A quick search of Google revealed the true horror of that drug. Fortunately I didn’t suffer a rupture. Folks - if you’re prescribed this don’t take it. Insist on something else.
