www.stokesentinel.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/stoke-oneill-press-conference-live-3563816Hello from Stoke HQThis is Michael O’Neill’s first pre-match press conference as Stoke manager. We’re not expecting any posed pictures with scarves or hats or big Ladbrokes betting slips because, given the circumstances, it’s a fortnight since he was appointed. It’s a huge game tomorrow. Can Stoke build momentum after that Barnsley game? This next seven games up to Christmas can really shape the season. There’s only one opponent, Hull (in 12th), who are currently in the top half.

Will it be live on that link FM? Don't think there's any live coverage anywhere - but it'll probably be on youtube in about an hour.

www.stokesentinel.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/stoke-oneill-press-conference-live-3563816Why Stoke?MON: I’ve had opportunities to leave Northern Ireland in the last eight years but it’s not been right. Stability of managers?
Stoke has always been a club I’ve kept my eye on, the model, the size... it’s an extremely attractive job and one I intend to grab with both hands. It’s more volatile than international football! I left a very stable situation. I had a contract for another four years with the Irish FA. But while there have been changes of manager here, there is a solid structure. I have enough belief in myself that I can do the job the owners believe I can do. Avoiding relegation the priority? It’s obviously something no one wants to happen and it’s very important players recognise the positive result was one step in the right direction. We need momentum. You tend to do that by getting results at home. We want to get a more streamlined group of players than we currently have and we can be in position to go in the right direction. What have you concentrated on this week?Putting a real structure in place that suits the players we have here then over time developing a squad of players suited to play that structure. We have perhaps players in the squad at the moment who are not ideally suited to the system I would normally play. In international football you have to prepare players in a short period of time. You have to get an alignment in your group of players. I’ve developed those skills over the last eight years. Players have already seen how we want to work. What can fans expect? I like my team to play on the front foot with energy... particularly here at home supporters want to see a team set up in a positive way. There are areas we can improve on from Barnsley but we were pleased with the reaction of players. How tired are you?
It has been demanding. The second half at Frankfurt was particularly long! As difficult as the Championship is I don’t think you get a double-header like Holland-Germany! I look forward to the challenge. I’ve got good people around me and a good group of players. I’m looking forward to getting settled in the area and moving the team forward. Injuries? We have one or two little doubts. Peter Etebo is one of those, we’ll see how he is in the morning. Sam Clucas is another. We have to just monitor how Sam is in the morning also. Ryan Shawcross is making good progress. He played 90 minutes on Tuesday, albeit in possibly a less demanding environment. He needs a little bit more before we make a decision on him. Other than that it’s fairly good. One of the issues we have is that, truth be told, we probably have too many players and that makes it slightly difficult to keep everyone involved. We’ve tried to do that, but again, the injury list is clearing up and that’s good because we come into a period when we’re going Saturday-Tuesday-Saturday. I think we then have a full week and then we have a demanding period up to Christmas. While the squad is big, there will be opportunities for players in the next run of games. FFP and January? There hasn’t been any mention in the last two days, maybe day three! I understand the parameters the club has to work in. There is a lot about the club which is Premier League but we have to make it efficient in the Championship. January gives us the opportunity to add to that efficiency in terms of playing staff and possibly players leaving. At this minute in time they have to be focused on doing the best they can for Stoke City. Verlinden and Tymon recalled? We’re still not decided. I do think there’s a bit of imbalance and a shortage of wide players. The players you mention come into that category. It’s been difficult to get younger players around because of the size of the squad. I hope to do that before January. We have to make decisions on that going forward - for the benefit of the group rather than individual. Most crucial part of the season? It certainly is for me, having come in. The next game is the most important. While we can look ahead and think where we can get three points, one thing the Championship has is that everyone is capable of beating anyone else. FIxtures against teams around us might be seen as the most important, it might not be the case. Those teams will have the same objectives as us. The next seven games give me a chance to assess the squad as well and what to do when the transfer window opens. That’s the message we’ll be hammering home to the players: getting that momentum into a run of games. I’ll have to leave Christmas shopping! Online or vouchers maybe!

I have to say I am impressed thus far. Talks plainly & simply and seems to know what he wants. I think he's hinting at quite an exodus in January. I am told he has a very effective scouting network, boy we need to unearth some real value for money signings.

Bad feeling about tomorrow ,
Driven by 50 years of watching stoke , over optimism on here and underestimating Wigan ,And injuries to th3 two key midfield players , I fancy my old mate 🐊May be having a nibble at Mr O’Neil tomorrow sadly .it would be very Stoke to make a mess of tomorrow

What does he mean in the Championship you don't have a double header like Holland- Germany?
He's underestimating Barnsley - Wigan

I'll start to worry when you get a good feeling. But maybe that's the answer...😁 PS So glad to see the GC back on the scene. I've missed him.
