Also have a look on truckers' forums for a few insights into how a lot of the Central and Eastern European haulage campanies (e.g. Waberers) operate. It seems like there's not really a level playing field and a lot of rules designed to protect truckers and other road users go unenforced.

An Italian man once said to me words to the effect, " You English are stupid you go out of your way to follow the rules, we Italians find ways to get round them"...... alongside the Germans the Italians are my favourite European nationality I would add. Having said that.... www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/politics/angela-merkel-germany-breaks-more-eu-rules-worst-bottom-class-a8198271.html

Apparently they have over £150m of debt and have a reputation for undercutting competition and then doing a shoddy job on which they make a loss. Bad news for the drivers but the demand is obviously there so you'd hope they'd get something else.

stobart have blood on there hands in regard the demise of the British haulage industry, no other uk based firm has put more of its fellow hauliers out of work ... stobart are notorious for steam rolling into your established contracts slashing the rates and then immediately trying to sub work back to its original haulier, there leadership over the last few years have got up to some questionable things ( note. Carlisle airport/Ireland) and have seen fit to get there fingers into everything... many things they shouldn’t of ever gone near, such as there AI contract, it’s one thing to employ monkeys shifting 26 pallets of toilet paper about its a very different thing to move a load of brick and block on site work, day in day out. Which is why there is a sea of trailers beside the a500,ex AI trailers , a contract hey got kicked off... stobart are huge in this country but it’s all on borrowed money etc. Tesco turning toward bidvest to join as a logistic partner is a massive kick in the nuts to stobart , I hope they fail. Many of there drivers will find new homes at whoever takes on the contract , hopefully they’ll see that for years they’ve been treated like horse shit and never look back

I’ve worked in the industry for 20 years, whatever your thoughts on Stobart’s or Bidvest as a business you’re comparing companies where one specialises in open book contracts (A to B and back empty, all extras costs sit with the customer) and one where they run predominately closed book contracts where the emphasis is on sharing cost savings with the customer.
Been in charge in many an open book contract where you just chuck cost at it at the customers expense, it’s far far easier. A lot of retailers are coming away from that business model as they try and make savings at the till.....

I remember joneses in sandbach used to deliver goods than instead of coming home empty brought maze etc for pigeons however because of filter rules (on siloes) etc think this had to stop. this was a cleaver way to increase there profits

Used to work with a bloke about 25 years ago who made a business of booking back loads with lots of haulage firms. He had several local business who'd come to him with loads for various places and he'd use his contacts to find somebody going back empty and book them to do the delivery. The difference between what he charged his customer and what he paid the haulier gave him a tidy income.
