The proper diamond that is, the four at the back one. The other time was against Preston, a game in which we actually played reasonably well but it was peak Butland losing his mind.
Today's performance pretty good, Derby was the best we have played all season I'd argue...
Makes you wonder if we have some hope going back to the two striker, traditional diamond and if all the chopping and changing has been killing us.

I’ve said we look best under the diamond in whatever guise it’s presented as, for me, Jones has to stick with it he changed formation to stop the individual errors which he shouldn’t have IMO.
At least we create a bucket load even if we might be abit more vulnerable

It was a 4.4.2 as far as I am concerned with no obvious diamond that i could see . Players just switched about as required - all this diamond stuff is just over complicating horseshit as far as I am concerned.

Well call it what you want it was 4 central midfielders, one more advanced, one more defensive and two providing some width and as you state there was some fluidity. That's the diamond though! Calling it the diamond isn't the complicated part  |

No idea why he shat it and deployed 352/532 for so long after how we did vs Derby, or Charlton for that matter. I'm not a massive fan of the diamond vs something like 4231 but we've looked far better with it than with 3 at the back, so he needs to stick with it now.
The midfield worries me a little because Allen will be a mainstay under Jones, and that leaves little room for an actual 10 (Powell) coming in without dropping one of the better mids (Clucas/Badou/Etebo) or one of the two strikers (which hasn't worked either).
Hopefully we just get Hogan in for Campbell and maybe Vokes for Gregory if needed next game, the rest should stay as-is for a few games.

I keep seeing people say it was a diamond and I don’t really buy it.
It was way more 4132 than a 41212 which is what I’d call a diamond.
It worked though.

It did work but it wasn’t a diamond and if people are giving it the big un re the diamond then it’s a point. I think the main reason it worked actually was Bruno af left back. Because McClean is such an easy target and if you go down that side you can relieve any sort of pressure. But he just shored that up. They prodded where teams usually would prod and got no chance where usually there’s plenty. Add in a proper DM too and it’s almost like we fucked the recruitment in the summer up..... |

The diamond was working fine, we were playing teams off the pitch & had one of the most shots for & fewest against in the league, we were only being let down by Butland being a liability & finding a way to let the odd shot the opposition did have go passed, through or under him. With us now having Martins-Indi & N'Diaye back we can put them in for McClean & Woods. (Fuck knows what Davies has done behind the scenes either so we'll add Federici in.) Not one of you bastards 'liked' my post either, so I'm now claiming the moral highground of being the only person on here who always had faith in the diamond! |

I would have liked it if you hadn't got Shirley at left back! 😁 The difference in the quality of passing, anticipation and crossing didn't just coincide with his omission. Edwards made important headed clearances and an excellent cross for the winning goal. Gregory should have scored following another good cross first half also. Probably wouldn’t have got three points without his contribution yesterday. Unnecessary changes to a rare team that wins well to be avoided! Let’s develop some team spirit. |
