Heavy influence on the final of the Canadian cup (qualifies Montreal for the Concacaf Chanpions Trophy (the Yank CL)) Second half report below from their website - imagine a creative player popping balls through sending strikers clear.... Scored a pen as well in the shootout. Pleased for him. www.impactmontreal.com/en/post/2019/09/25/impact-wins-voyageurs-cup-torontoMissed penalty call in the second
The hosts looked for their main man up front early in the second half, when Justin Morrow swung in a ball towards Altidore in the 47th minute, but his header was wide of the mark and no trouble for goalkeeper Clément Diop.
In the 51st minute, defender Richie Laryea ran the ball from his own half all the way to the Impact’s goal line, passing to Jonathan Osorio at the top of the box. The Canadian international hit it first time, but his shot rattled the post to the left of Diop and stayed out.
Montreal struck twice on the counter minutes after, first when Shamit Shome was played in behind the defense on the right flank, before cutting in and finding Piatti in the box, the Argentine couldn’t get a shot off. Then, it was Bojan who passed for Urruti in similar position, but his shot was stopped comfortably by Bono.
In the 64th minute, Bojan passed for Shome on the right side, who immediately found Urruti. The forward crossed in a ball towards Clément Bayiha in the box that clearly touched Auro’s hand, but the referee called a corner.
Toronto then took the lead in the 70th minute. A corner played short was crossed in towards Osorio, who managed to shove the ball past a defender towards Endoh, and the forward was able to beat Diop, despite the French goalkeeper getting a piece of it.
In the 84th minute, Bojan received the ball in midfield and immediately found Lassi Lappalainen’s run in behind the defense. The Finn made his way in on goal unopposed but was fouled right outside the box by Chris Mavinga, who was immediately sent off by the referee. Bojan stepped up to take the ensuing free kick, but his attempt was inches away from the crossbar.
In the 90th minute, Piatti had a golden opportunity to tie the game and put his team up on aggregate, beating his man in front of the box and taking a left-footed shot, but he was stopped by the crossbar.
“I’ve been waiting a long time to get my hands on a trophy,” said Impact midfielder Nacho Piatti. “Today is a magnificent day for the entire team. We’ve put in a lot of effort since the beginning of the season, and holding this trophy feels good. Thanks to the entire group, because we stayed together. We won here and now we can return to the Champions League. I’ll never forget the final we reached, when we were 45 minutes away from playing clubs like Barcelona. I’ll always remember that game. It motivates us, and we hope to do well when the time comes.”

So there we have it...... Bojan, Afobe, Berahino all misfits at Stoke, all making an impact with their new clubs. Something very deeply disturbing how Stoke City try and bring out the best in players. Are they over-coached? Shouldn’t coaches allow flair players a certain amount of free reign on the pitch. There’s such a player as box-to-Box midfield players and Hudson, imo, was our best ever. Bojan is another but this diamond formation bollox does not fit the box-to-box type of player. IMO of course.

It makes it even more ludicrous that he let Bojan go with your assertions that he played in such a formation for much of his youth career.

It's a 3-4-3 diamond adopted from Cruyff's time at Ajax or the 4-3-3 diamond with a false 9 which was Pep's adaptation to it They key thing is that it's fluid, but has always relied on a diamond shape to work and function with very adventurous full backs in Dani Alves and Jordi Alba/Eric Abidal at it's peak. The fundamentals of it are exactly the same. Cruyff imposed it on all aspects of the club when he was manager and La Masia teams have stuck with it ever since.

Bojan should still be here. It will be a long long time till we get another talent like him through our doors. Stoke failed themselves the fans and Bojan massively in how they have handled this whole affair. Just wish someone at the club would have the decency to make some sort of statement apologising for the right fookin mess they are making of things. But they don't do accountability do they.
Maybe when they see a crowd of sub 10k tomorrow the bells might go off in their thick skulls.
And I know I am in for some abuse here (not bothered) but to me the whole Bojan situation really highlights everything that has been failing at Stoke this past 4 years. We barely got a tune out of a player whose Barcelona academy record surpassed Lionel's. Dear oh dear.

Jones wrote him off after their little spat when Bodjer tried something clever in the 60th minute v Rotherham on 13th April 2019 and was hauled off immediately
Rotherham had just scored to make it 2-1 to us (we were 2-0 up at the break and playing OK)
Quelle surprise we conceded again afterwards and we never saw him again.
A side that struggled to score....scored 2 in a half with him playing....taken off and conceded....never seen again.
Its OK, we have replaced him with...eerrm....Joe Allen at 10, or Ince at 10, and injured Nick Powell at 10....
Still completely baffled by the clubs whole mismanagement.
Now in a settled side, playing regularly, and well apparently. Creating chances for others....
PS - that Barcelona side above - what a side!
Its almost 2 diamonds isn't it - Koeman at the tip of the defensive one, becomes centre half when needed, but also becomes CDM when needed allowing the others to attack.
Alas we don't have a player anywhere fit to lace Koemans boots!

Alas we don't have a player anywhere fit to lace Koemans boots! He made a lovely breaking run to set up the second goal too in that game, playing in McClean who squared it. Such a shame. And yes, a marvellous side with the best footballing brain of all time (as a player and manager combined) masterminding it and ensuring they'd stick more or less to variations of that system for the next 25 years or so. Interestingly, Barca's worst start to a season in 25 years has coincided with the complete dearth of players stepping up from their youth teams to the first team in recent years and arriving in Catalonia without the footballing education the club has gained a reputation for.

It's not really a diamond when Messi plays though is it? And it definitely isn't when Suarez does. I’m more making the point that Bojan grew up playing diamond systems rather than commenting on how Barca are currently playing it. The issue Lawrieleslie suggested was whether the diamond would stifle Bojan somehow but he definitely would have played in it coming through La Masia which is why I find it odd Jones didn’t fancy him for it. Really interesting that video... never seen it before or looked at Cruyff‘s „diamond“. He used two wingers in the back three so they could slot in the left/right midfield when attacking. I noted the left/right midfield/wings were never spoken about coming back into a five back four as the defensive midfield was there to help... this would ensure that there were outlets either side of a possible crowded midfield to stretch the opposition.... and at least offer chances. Yes of course, they were skilful players but perhaps Jones‘ „diamond“ is too deep and allows the opposition more chances to score (rather than being on the back foot) and us to make more mistakes....

Jones sat down with him and had a chat decided it was better for him to search elsewhere. Jones thinking in this was The technical ability of Allen Ince and Mcclean who know how to be creative score. He was probably, sadly, one of only a couple of dozen people at best that couldn't foresee Powell spending half the season on the treatment table. For a manager to spend half a season bemoaning our lack of creativity and to then ship out one of very few creative players in his squad at the first opportunity is just bizarre. For my money Jones saw what happened with Rowett and shit himself, shame, turns out it was irrelevant anyway.

I think one issue is the centre-backs, in a formation like this you need centre-backs capable of distributing the ball effectively up the pitch, which ours are unable to do. I think that was the rationale behind signing Cameron Carter-Vickers who is a good player on the ball and a great passer from defence. The trouble is he's binned off the formation before we've really had a chance to see anything from it. We conceded silly goals in the early games which put him and his formation immediately under pressure and then a dismal display at Preston was enough to see him get rid, despite what I thought was a very good display v Derby with lots of high intensity play in their half which the diamond affords you. Since then he's changed formation practically every games and now the performances have gone South in addition to the results.

I watched it. The first half was slow and cagey but the second half was really good. Bojan played very well and I was so happy to see him step up and bury the first penalty - a definite sign his confidence is returning.
Agree with what others have said, I would put the MLS around the level of the mid-lower Championship (but with less physicality which obviously suits a player like Bojan), and I would back every single one of their teams to beat us at the moment, sadly. Including the Impact.
